Summary

This short summary found on Shmoop.com below gives a better summary than I could have come up with on the entire book in a few sentences.
"Several noble houses fight a civil war over who should be king, while an exiled princess tries to find her place in the world, and the kingdom is threatened by some rising supernatural threat in the north."
The book is told in 8 different perspectives, which makes it difficult to explain in one concise paragraph, but makes the reading even more interesting and intricate.

What did you like and/or dislike about the book?

One thing I liked about the book was the overall way it was written. There are books that are written as we speak today, and some from older years, such as this book and its following books, and others like it. I always found books written like this - with this tone, language, vocabulary and overall way of writing to be my favorite. Another thing I liked about the contents of this book would be it's vast knowledge of itself, in little pages. There are so many names and places to begin with, and when you keep reading they start to fall in place and understanding.

Which parts of the plot (characters, setting, conflict, etc) were most interesting/why?

I think most of the parts of the plot were very interesting, from the differences of characters and their own POV's to the settings of the different lands and Houses that belong to the different family names, that are ample, yet kind of confusing. The conflict starts small, internally, and more conflicts arise with more urgency than the last, all different, some interrelated and always interesting.

Favorite Book Cover

I have not seen the series, therefore I do not know which character is on this version of the cover of the book. This one is my favorite cover though, not only because of it realism, but because it holds the same serious tone as the book does, and I can infer that it shows, in relation to the story-line, the effort or power put into sitting at the throne, based on the gloominess and seriousness of it, and him holding his sword in front of him at hand.

3 Quotes

"And winter is coming" - Page 24

This is like an unusual motto, but a regular saying, the Stark words, which mean more than simply winter. It's more than it shows and unique.

"Somewhere off in the distance, a wolf was howling. Crows circled the broken tower, waiting for corn." - Page 85

I found this quite sad, as describing Bran's favorite things and his day flashing before him as he is pushed to his death. He can hear his direwolf howling for him, as he was previously when Bran told him to stay, and he can hear the crows, where he was going to meet at the top of a tower to feed them, then - nothing.

"She was afraid of what would come next, but for a while nothing happened." - Page 108

This entire page is basically where Daenerys and Khal Drogo are to consummate their marriage, which she has dreaded since she heard she was to be given to him. She is scared of his kind, but after the thoughtful gifts, and the time they sepd alone their, I think she feels that he is kinder and softer than she thought, and in the end willingly gives herself to him. I like this page and quote because she realizes she isn't afraid of him, and though she may not love him, has different feelings than she did prior to the wedding and party.

Recommendation

Explain why you recommend this book or not, and to whom you would recommend it (consider what kind of reader might also enjoy it). Write 1 paragraph at least.
I would definitely recommend this book to many people, including my sister, who has found solace to her obsession of watching the Game of Thrones series. I would also recommend this book to readers who like a challenge and are interested in fantasy books. This book has challenges in some of the vocabulary it uses, and the language from the time the story is set. I love the fantasy and tone of it, as will readers who enjoy reading books like the Lord of the Rings series.

This song, Emperor's New Clothes by Panic! At The Disco reminds me of Viserys, Daenerys' brother, who is trying to take back his crown that was stolen from his family as their title was stolen. The chorus of the song relates to Viserys' prerequisite to the crown.
"I'm taking back the crown
I'm all dressed up and naked
I see what's mine and take it
(Finders keepers, losers weepers)
Oh yeah
The crown...
So close I can taste it
I see what's mine and take it
(Finders keepers, losers weepers)
Oh yeah"

What connections did you have with the book? What can you compare it to? What did it remind you of? In what ways was/wasn’t it relatable?

One connection I can make with the book is a personal one with a character, Arya. I compare her to myself, and I imagine others too who could relate to maybe being different, feeling like an outcast. She reminds me of myself sometimes, as she compares herself to her sister, Sansa, who is attractive, and good at all of the maidens work, while one of the few talents Arya claims is horseback riding. Many times have I looked at what I can do, and what someone else can do - or realizing what I can't do well versus the few I can.
