"Aside from star trek and not speaking Farsi, depression was pretty much the only thing we had in common." 
- Darius's dad has had depression sense he was in collage and  has been taking medication.   
- Darius is having a hard time finding the right medication for his depression.
- Darius's mom warns him that people in the middle east view mental health differently

- Darius doesn't speak Farsi but his sister and moms side of the family do, he feels like it is a cultural gap, keeping him from feel really Persian 
- for the Persian new-year Darius and his family set up a half-seen and this holiday is important to his dad.
"Sometimes i thought dad liked Nowruz (Persian new-year) more than the rest of us combined. Maybe it let him feel a little bit Persian" 
- at the airport a TSA agent "randomly selected Darius for a extra screening of what was in his bag" 
- his grandmothers house has different toilets and Darius dosnt really know how to use them 
- in Iran mental health isn’t seen in the same way as in America so Darius’s grandfather is confused when he sees him taking his meds
- Iranian men don’t tipicly  show that much emotion or pain
- Babou thinks its very important for Darius to see where he came from but the day before he thought Darius wasn’t Persian enough because he didn’t speak Farsi. 
- on Nowruz Darius is eating breakfast and saids he feels Persian

- Darius is overweight and he feels really bad about it. 
"Stephen Kellner was always handing me the salad bowl. As if salad would counteract the weight gain from my meds. As if lack of discipline was the root of all my problems. As if all the worry about my weight didn't make me feel worse than I already did" 
- Darius shows a little confidence when he refuses Chip's help and tells him to leave him alone. 
- Trent picks on Darius and calls him a terrorist. Darius admits it bothers him. 
- Darius’s confidence gets shattered after sohrab and his friends make fun of his dick
- When Darius is getting ready for Nowruz( Persian New Year) he feels good but when his uncle greats him he pats his stomach and saids “ where this all come from? All those medicines” and that makes him feel ashamed

- sohrab is boosting Darius confidence and tells him to join his school team 
- Darius is getting good at soccer and it helps his confidence

- Darius feels different from both of his parents sides. He feels like he isn't Persian enough or american enough. 
- when Darius is showering with his soccer friends, they see that he isn’t circumcised and they make fun of him for it 
- when Darius over hears his dad and grandfather talking about him he feels very sad and ashamed aspecally sence he has differences with both of them

- “ I didn’t really feel like Stephen Keller's son at all” 
- Darius loves his sister a lot. 
- Darius and his dad watch an episode of startreck every night. He feels like like it is their "thing" 
"it felt good to have a thing with dad,when i could have him to myself for forty-seven minuts, and he could act like he enjoyed my company for the span of one episode"
- Darius's grandfather has a tumor and because of this they are going on a trip to Iran to visit his mom's family. 
- Darius's dad dosnt like that him and his son have to take medication. 
"Hes ashamed of me. He was ashamed of us. Ubermensches aren't supposed to need medication" 
- when Darius and his sister were babies their dad firejumped with them. Darius screamed and cried till his parents had to leave the event while his sister giggled and wanted to go again.
"my sister was a lot braver than me." 
- Darius's dad wants him to get a hair cut but Darius doesn't want to and his dad tries giult tripping him.
"It's nearly as long as your sisters, what kind of example are you setting for her. 
" It's ridiculous. Did you ever think that you weren't get picked on so much if you weren't so..." 
- there is a lot of tension between him and his father.
- when talking with his grandparents on skype its weird and awkward
- even when Darius is sad about being bullied, his dad makes him laugh
- Darius wanted to watch Star Trek with his dad but when he walks in he sees that his dad and his sister are already watching it without him. He feels betrayed because Star Trek was his thing with his dad 
“It was the only time I ever got to be his son”
- on the way home, Babou got lost and had to stop driving. His brain tumor was acting up and Darius’s mom got very sad.
- On Nowruz Darius is feeling loved and accepted in a family for the first time

- Darius was really thinking sour ab was his friend but after the showers he’s not so sure 
“I was convinced we were to be friends. But Sohrab Rezaei was just another soulless minion of orthodoxy.”
- Sohrab apologizes and Darius forgives him ( real friends apologize for their actions and take responsibility)
- Sohrab understands how Darius feels and they don’t have to say anything to have a conversation. 
- On Nowruz, Sohrab suprizes Darius with a soccer jersey and Darius feels really good about their friendship
- “Sohrab had no walls inside. I loved that about him.”
-“Sohrab understood me. I understood him too. And it was pretty much the most amazing thing ever”
- Darius opens up to Sohrab about things with his dad and his depression. They talk about Darius’s and his dad’s relationship and Darius know Sohrab understands him.
- “ your place was empty for me too, I never had a friend either”

- Sohrab is able to open up to Darius about his dad
“Sohrab knew it was okay to cry in front of me, he knew I wouldn’t tell him not to have feelings. He felt safe with me.”
-Sohrab defends him when the other socccer boys start making fun of him  
- sohrab finds out his dad has died and he gets really mad at Darius.
