While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Regina Spektor

This is a simple video which features a live performance and footage of the film, and it's sole purpose is to get you interested in the film, it's not a very deep concept, it's not flashy and bombastic, just a simple performance video. By doing this, you don't get distracted from the purpose, which is advertisement, and therefore you finish watching the video and consider purchasing the soundtrack or watching the film overall. It's basic but very effective.

Bowie - Flight of the Concords

This video is an amalgamation of 1970's David Bowie references, from the Halloween Jack costume, to the mimic riff that FOTC pulled from Space Oddity, it's an affectionate parody of David Bowie and glam rock, meant to evoke humour and familiarity from his imagery. Something to note is that this video was a lot of people's go to on the day of Bowie's passing, so it says a lot about people's reaction to kind humour and relevant parody.

Fiona Apple - Every Single Night

The video to Every Single Night owes it's eeriness to the surrealist imagery spliced throughout it, from Fiona's octopus headdress, to her affair with a multitude of snails, the director's vision was probably to display the disarray of the music in a visual context, in order to give the audience member a heavy sense of discomfort upon first watching. After a couple of viewings, the visuals start to meld with the lyrical content, but I think the main purpose of the video is to represent how jumbled the brain can be thanks to an anxiety disorder or any kind of mental illness, mirroring the lyrical themes. It allows the viewer to feel, to relate even if it's a struggle.

Breathing - Kate Bush

Kate Bush establishes a simple but surreal concept, in which she acts in the role of a foetus, struggling for air. Her videos could often be called surrealist, but this was a video with a message, rallying against pregnant women who smoked. This video is directed to be striking and memorable, even if the image is essentially the same throughout, and maybe that's what makes it such a thoughtful video. You're meant to walk away from this with some extra consideration for the topic.

Something About Us - Daft Punk

The album Discovery was also the soundtrack to the animated movie 'Interstellar 555' and this is part of the movie's middle, where one of the protagonists is wounded and in crisis. The emotion is palpable throughout, as the animation moves slick but not slow, meaning you can enjoy it and understand why it may be upsetting. As well as that, the story is communicated in simple shots and impacts you even without the backing of music.

David Bowie - Lazarus

David Bowie died shortly after the release of this video, and the lyrical content and imagery seemed to marry together to cause massive assumption from person to person. Many people assumed that this art piece was his swan song, that he knew exactly what he was doing, but it was revealed that he hadn't found out he was terminal until shortly after the release of Lazarus. This is the perfect and ultimate example of a false assumption, and it's still a valid interpretation of the video, even if it wasn't the actual intention.

Jeff Buckley - Grace

This is a simple video, which makes it all the more effective. The filter gives it a dreamy, vintage feel, working in harmony with the song to bring a powerful quality that Buckley's voice often entails. The live footage is spliced together with a variety of filler shops that stop the video from being dull or uninteresting, and watching this in reflection of Buckley's death, it seems like a mournful documentary of sorts. The video is gentle and thoughtfully put together, and hopefully this is the elements that create emotion.

This can evoke a frantic mood, or panic, but the imagery allows it to be calm and striking. As Alt-J's video is based off of a painting, the movements may also be reflecting the way eyes move as they look at a tapestry, allowing you to take in every scene and analyse it. To the audience member, this tells the story, and the camera movements play in a key role in that.

It briefs over a majority of the scenes explored in the video before Solange's vocals come in, meaning that when you get to those briefly seen shots, they're familiar and fascinating. The cutting to the beat here is purely used for impact, visually and emotionally, and even though there is a lack of narrative, the way that the shots are cut and placed leaves you gripped.
