Daily Classroom Jobs

• Line Leader / Caboose - Guides the class and ensures everyone is safely in line when moving between rooms.

• Door Holder - Holds the classroom door open for the rest of the students when transitioning.

• Librarian - Helps organize and straighten the books in the classroom reading corner.

• Supply Manager - Organizes scissors, glue, and writing tools or puts them away at the end of the day.

• Board Cleaner - Erasing the whiteboard or chalkboard at the end of a lesson or the end of the school day.

• Plant Helper - Takes care of the classroom greenery, which teaches kindergarteners about nature, growth, and gentle handling.

• Table Captain - Acts as the leader and manager for their specific table or group of desks.

• Recycling Monitor - Ensuring recyclable items go into the correct bin instead of the trash.

• Lights Monitor / Electrician - Turns the classroom lights on or off when leaving or entering the room.

• Classroom Greeter - Welcomes students, teachers, and visitors into the room, creating a friendly and inclusive environment.

• Pencil Patrol - Ensures the classroom always has a supply of ready-to-use pencils, preventing interruptions during writing time.

• Sanitizer /Soap Helper - Helper ensures that everyone cleans their hands properly before eating, after recess, or during bathroom transitions.

• Paper Passer - Hand out worksheets, crayons, or craft supplies to classmates.

• Chair Stacker - Helps clear the floor at the end of the day so the janitorial staff can easily sweep and mop

Students collaborate to design and build their own “favourite spaces” using a variety of materials such as cardboard boxes, paper, and loose parts. Real-life images of landmarks, community spaces, and familiar logos can be used as inspiration to support authentic connections. As the project develops, students enhance their community by adding roads, people, and natural elements (e.g., trees, rocks), creating a rich environment for small-world dramatic play where they can act out personal stories and experiences.

To ensure the project reflects the diverse experiences of the classroom community, families can be invited to share meaningful places through a simple parent letter (such as the Questionnaire provided in the Padlet). 

Extension Activities/Cross-Curricular Connections:

• Science- Human-Made/Natural Objects:

  • Discuss how buildings and other spaces are human-made. 

  • Create natural spaces and objects, such as trees, lakes, and other landforms to add to the community.

  • Play “20 Questions”: Choose a human-made or natural object and have students guess by asking questions such as “Is it human-made?”

• Outdoor/ Land-Based Learning: 

  • Respectful Use of Materials: Teach students to gather natural items respectfully (only what is on the ground, take only what is needed), introducing early stewardship and care for the land

  • Discuss the Land as the First Community: Guide conversations about how plants, animals, and insects also form communities and have needs (food, shelter, water)

  • Caring for Our Community and Land: Introduce simple actions like picking up garbage, protecting plants, and respecting shared spaces to reinforce responsibility and belonging.

  • FNMI Perspectives: Introduce the idea that the land is important to many communities and should be respected and cared for.

  • Sit-Spots for Observation and Connection: Students regularly visit a chosen outdoor “sit-spot” to quietly observe, reflect, and build a personal connection to the land.
