By the nineteenth century, denim and jean were names for fabrics made in Britain and the USA. Denim was a cotton cloth made from one coloured and one white thread. Jean was a cloth made from threads of the same colour. They were used to produce tough working garments. In the mid nineteenth century, many Europeans and Asians migrated to California during a gold rush. Because of this, the demand by the miners for hard wearing working clothes increased rapidly. Jeans marked culture of the last 40 years. They were first working clothes than symbols of disobedience only to become fashion items. It was produced in England in the 17th century, then in America in the 18th century, but this cloth may have differed from the french original.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, denim "waist overalls" became popular as work wear in much of the western United States. Wider American public came to see them as a symbol of the Wild West when they were worn by film stars in the increasingly popular Hollywood Westerns. Levis products were not sold in the eastern United States until at least 1930.

In the post war period, denim waist overalls experienced a change of name, with the term jeans coming into common use. They also experienced a change of image. Until the post war economic boom of 1945 -1973, 'leisure wear' was something only provided for a small and very rich elite since these were the only people who enjoyed

a significant amount of leisure time. As people became more affluent and as working hours were reduced in post war USA, jeans became a garment for recreation as well as work.

From the 1960s onwards, jeans became widely available across the world. Levis and many other global (and local) brands of jeans are now manufactured in factories in dozens of countries. These factories are now mainly located in Asia and Latin America. This is because the 'assembly', but not the 'design', side of the clothing industry now operates in those countries where labour is cheaper. Many new businesses producing jeans have been set up all over the world over the last half century.
