What do you think of when you think of Gender?
Multiple Choices- up to the person to identify
Complex
Social Construct:
How has history or society impacted the way we view gender?
The first intro to gender starts very very young. Learning gender as a social construct can be seen by analyzing history. A lot of different cultures historically have more than two genders. Looking at history gives us a good context to look at what are the differences between genders.
Pink vs blue and the marketing campaign that has changed those associations.
How is the way that gender is defined socially upholding the expectations around class and race?
Life is so complicated and every possibility exists and the only way we can comprehend the complexity of life by creating boxes and categories to help us understand the world on a plane that we can process. Maybe biologically speaking, there are two sexes- how we reproduce as humans. But the reality on how we as individuals identify are as complex as an infinite amount of possibilities. Gender is between your ears and sex is between your legs.
We are currently having a cultural shift where more awareness for non-binary nature of gender is coming about. How and why is this shift making people uncomfortable? People are worried about misidentifying and are worried about offending. People who are otherwise pretty open, are resistant to thought processes that are outside of the binary way of thinking about gender.
People are only going to learn when they come into a place ready to learn. When someone tries to make a joke, just ask upfront- what do you mean by that? And let them suffer through trying to explain their ignorance.

you're inundated with messages regarding gender roles from the time you're born. I've had to consciously unlearn a lot & I'm trying my best to teach my son a better way The other day on tv, someone said a color was "girlish" & my 10 yr old son yelled from the other room "colors don't have genders!".
