The Ted talk showed how we unconciously appoint a single story to people without understanding their life. Particularily how Africa is viewed as a poor country. I am definitely guilty of that assumption. I was an avid reader as a child and like that lady said all the characters i was exposed to were white and english or american. Irish people have always been stereocast as "drinkers".

I came from egypt 7 years ago and my girls classmates always ask them do you ride a camel do you live in tents how do you learn to speak english at the begining i would laugh on it but when I found that ireland has lots of difeerent culture the classroom should be more inclusive if I know that i have children from indea or poland in my classroom next year my plan should be more inclusive and they celebrate festivals from all countries

In the Early Years we need to seek out diverse perspectives. We can ask questions and look at their perspectives and respect their experiences. We can encourage them to share their stories so we avoid falling into the trap of a single story. Katie

It is important to be empathetic and non judgmental as we are only meeting a person at a period in time. We do not ever have a full story and do not know what a person's lived experience is.

After watching the video it demonstrated how stereotyping is still happening today. For instance, how the woman was discussing in the video that just because she is from Nigeria it was suggested that she must have lived a certain way and have come from a poor background. However, in the Early Years Settings educators are much more a ware of 'Inclusion' and 'Diversity'. There are more items such as books with different cultures available for children to read and dolls with different skin tones for them to play with.
