The German soldiers arrived in Signet, they were welcomed by the Jews and were un-alarming, the Hungarian soldiers made the ghetto and in circled them in barbed wire to isolate them from the outside and made them live there within themselves (the Jews).

The Romanian government allowed the Jews to be taken into the concentration camps and they allowed them to be isolated and mistreated by the German and Hungarian soldiers. The Romanian and Hungarian government both failed to protect their own citizens against the evil rule of the Nazis and they not only allowed it but sponsored it to protect their own power.

Eliezar and his family arrive in the first concentration camp called Auschwitz, He is separated from his Mother and sisters and his father and him are taken to be examined and they are selected briefly to be sent to the crematoria.(A place where a person's body is burned.)

Eliezar feels anger at God, because they are about to be killed and his God that he has devoted himself to for his whole life has not answered his prayers to be saved. He has resentment because in his belief God was always going to be with him and that was the reason he was so devoted to God but now that he needed God, God wasn't there for him.

Eliezar was in the train to Birkenau where he found Mrs. Schachter and her little boy in the same car, she had been distraught from being separated from her husband and two older sons so she began to scream at an unknown fire.

In this moment it shows an unconcsience reminder of family loyalty something that Eliezar unknowingly takes note of as his own family will soon be affected like them. Eliezar is reminded of the family loyalty that happens when something awful is in effect.

The Oberkapo and his young pipel were arrested and sent to be executed because the Oberkapo was found to have tried to revolt against the SS by storing weapons.

This is one of the examples of were Eliezar shows his weakening faith, he shows this because he does not believe that God is with them anymore he is not helping the young innocent child be saved from being executed. God's silence to this people being killed mercilessly and Eliezar realizing that he is not going to be saved any time soon gives him a weak strength as he loses more faith by the day.

Eliezar and his block were made to march through the snow and night to Gleiwitz as he sees himself slowly losing all hope and all mental and physical strength.

In this moment we can see that Eliezar is done with all things related with God and he is seen as defeated and less than human as he has been unable to view himself as one after the brutal and grueling hard labor he has been put through. His faith is no longer there.

In the train wagon Eliezar and his father are passing through a town where the people throw pieces of crust into the train as all the prisoners are suffering from extreme hunger and thirst they fight over the small bread crumbs.

This shows how the family dynamics were changing when Eliezar was toward the last of the Nazi Regime where he felt nothing to what he was seeing. He was seeing everyone around him betray their own parents for their own survival and this is a reflection of what will happen to Eliezar further in the book as he himself will soon need to make a similar decision regarding his family.

It is the day of Rosh Hashanah all the people in the concentration camp gather and they pray but Eliezar is thinking to himself.

He feels a sense of doubt he has anger and he has vengeance towards God because he had been unable to save them for the atrocity they have been though especially as the Nazi's victims were innocent people that were killed ruthlessly.

Eliezar's father has been suffering from dysentery and his severely sick and ill, he is beaten by an SS soldier for not keeping quiet and he is on the verge of death before Eliezar ignores his final cries and he goes to sleep.

Once his father died Eliezar had lost everything that kept him motivated. He had been though a lot of things emotionally and losing his family and his life and his own faith made him so empty. He was now prioritizing himself something that at the beginning on the book he had vowed not to choose himself over his father but then he abandoned his father that night changing his character.

Eliezar's camp has been starving for days and they soon know that their camp will be liquidated soon due to the in coming of the resistance army, they are not killed because they stayed in their block they are freed soon after by the resistance army.

The resistance army had finally been able to free all of the people that were in the camp and everyone had been liberated. The army had finally been able to free most of the concentration camps. The regime and the violence that they had endured had finally been over once and for all.
