Structural racism in Brazil and the United States have the same roots in slavery but appear differently in each society. In the United States, racial segregation was codified over many decades, generating shocking disparities in income, education, and health that persist. In Brazil, segregation was not legally enacted, but ideological racial democracy has masked entrenched disparities so that structural racism is less visible but no less entrenched. The U.S. also experiences an implicit legal system to address race, but Brazil experiences denial of racism, which makes addressing effective policy harder to implement. Battling structural racism across both nations entails acknowledging their varied histories and social settings and mobilizing international solidarity towards the elimination of racial injustice.
