The Jewish community in Essen began to grow in the mid-19th century with the formal appointment of a Rabbi, Salomon Samuel, in 1894. The community grew to around 4,500 Jews by 1934. Although there was some damage during the Night of the Broken Glass, it remains one of the best-preserved synagogues in Germany.
