Hammered dulcimers, hurdy-gurdies, castanets, alpine horns (yes, the same in the Ricola commercials), fifes, bagpipes, citterns (a type of string instrument), and shawms (a type of double-reed woodwind instrument) were used in much of Swiss folk music. By the 19th century, we knew much more about Swiss music. Brass bands started to become a thing, and instruments were being built better to more of a standard. Not long after the accordion was invented in Vienna, it made its way to Switzerland where they embraced this instrument that would allow you to play both the melody and harmony at the same time, yet far more portable than a piano (to be honest, most instruments are). Oddly enough, the accordion wasn’t used in dance bands until the early 1900s. As we got into the 20th century, genres like jazz, swing, and the foxtrot began to infiltrate Swiss music, especially in the urban areas. The Alphorn: The alphorn or alpenhorn or alpine horn is a labrophone, consisting of a straight several-meter-long wooden natural horn of conical bore, with a wooden cup-shaped mouthpiece.

The Hammered Dulcimer: The hammered dulcimer is a percussion-stringed instrument which consists of strings typically stretched over a trapezoidal resonant sound board.

Hurdy-Gurdy: The 'hurdy-gurdy' is a mechanical string instrument that produces sound by a hand-crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those of a violin.

Castanets: Castanets, also known as clackers or palillos, are a percussion instrument that is used by attaching them to your fingers, and hitting them together.

Rebec: The rebec is a bowed stringed instrument of the Medieval era and the early Renaissance. In its most common form, it has a narrow boat-shaped body and 1-5 strings. Played on the arm or under the chin, the technique and tuning may have influenced the development of the violin.

Bagpipe: Bagpipes are a woodwind instrument using enclosed reeds fed from a constant reservoir of air in the form of a bag.

Citteren: The cittern or cithren is a stringed instrument dating from the Renaissance. Modern scholars debate its exact history, but it is generally accepted that it is descended from the Medieval citole. Its flat-back design was simpler and cheaper to construct than the lute.

Scottish: Scottish dance is the distinctively Scottish form of country dance, itself a form of social dance involving groups of couples of dancers tracing progressive patterns. A dance consists of a sequence of figures.

Walzer: The Waltz is a ballroom and folk dance, normally in triple time, performed primarily in closed position.

Ländler: The Ländler is a folk dance in time which was popular in Austria, Bavaria, German Switzerland, and Slovenia at the end of the 18th century. It is a partner dance which strongly features hopping and stamping. It might be purely instrumental or have a vocal part, sometimes featuring yodeling.

Polka: The Polka is originally a Czech dance and genre of dance music familiar throughout all of Europe and the Americas. It originated in the middle of the nineteenth century in Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic.
