Place + (Taboo) by Laura Harris

Discussion on 'how people describe their sense of place?' What are your thoughts? Are you free to associate in the Highlands & Islands? Definition of free association. 1 a : the expression (as by speaking or writing) of the content of consciousness without judgement as an aid in gaining access to unconscious processes especially in psychoanalysis. b : the reporting of the first thought that comes to mind in response to a given stimulus (Merriam-Webster.com). I have changed "censorship" to "judgement".

Shortly I will post a bit about where i'm coming from, where i'm at and where I'm heading. I really hope all of you can contribute something on how you perceive your context, as in your sense of place and how it effects your everyday life. Including descriptions of thoughts, feelings and actions. Parallel to what is known & unknown taking into consideration your beliefs, behaviours and relations.
Later on I would like to bring to the forefront what changes you would like to experience in your current place.
Any questions at all or if you know anyone else who you think might be willing to take part in this shared- voicing- platform, please get in touch.

Thank you.

I'm of here and not from here. I get to be in the luxurious position of knowing no-one in a place where you are interrogated and placed with a "wha's dy fok?" (who are your people?) and "Whaars du fae?" (where are you from? note* possible radius not more than 90 miles) before you are allowed to be.
I am of here, of this place with its incessant gales and sky upon sea. I've lived in fast places and inland places, other places. Brilliant - all of it but I'm still more me here. Maybe it is the timing of things. (So much has happened I no longer care if I'm out of step!) but I feel I am allowed to contribute, in whichever way I wish. Bit of a luxury but it's a small pond. I can create, make creative happenings happen and rumble around education. Maybe place = valued

Stories of Movement Workshop: - Online Micro Conversation

Virtual Context: My friend Kirsty Glass introduces Clare Daly, project manager for a Highland Immigration support charity who is hosting a workshop at IMAG on 21st Nov.

Clare: I’m also fascinated by people's sense of place and place identity - I can send on the posters of the series of events that we are planning Laura - the theme is 'Stories of Movement'.

I'm very happy to share the knowledge of what we're doing - I'm encouraging a reframing or reconceptualisation of how we think about migration, movement is more useful for so many reasons in the modern context.

Hope that makes sense Laura - we are using the civic event to show that everyone embodies and expresses a story of movement, and when we align to that perspective it makes 'othering' much more difficult.

Laura: Yes, please could you email me some of the event posters. Kirsty shared the storytelling event with me just now and what I find interesting is that you ask people to bring an object with them. Can I ask what is your reason for this? Is the object a symbol of identity or is it a prompt to aid imagination for creativity, or something else?

Clare: Good question Laura - some of our migrants and refugees don't like to identify as such given their vulnerable status, so the object allows them to symbolically portray their movement, I think some muslim women also don't like to be in photographs - I also think using an object highlights our relationship and connection with the material world and all the complexities that evokes.

I should say Laura, the poem by Kirsty is to show that there are historical stories of movement too (i.e. it highlights commonality).
