EAL students should be allowed to use their L1 when using their notebooks or participating in a small group activity. We should also be mindful of allowing them extra support, in the shape of dictionaries or translation apps on their phones for instance. This is likely to foster their sense of belonging in the classroom and in the wider life of the school community. It would also help other students develop a set of positive attitudes to other languages and respect for other cultures.

Not only should EAL students be reminded of that, they could help foster engagement and interest with the other students.

Using several means to infer meaning can be really helpful to EAL students. The MFL classroom is likely to be very cognitively demanding for some, as it might require students' brain to effectively be working in several languages at once. A sense of routine, with the same symbols used for the same activities (listening, reading etc.) can be an example of that extra support who will benefit all students, whether they be EAL or not.
