What is AccuVein?

AccuVein is a laser based device that improves the vascular outcomes for patients requiring IV therapy or venous access procedures. AccuVein uses near-infrared (NIR) technology to help healthcare professionals see the superficial veins, valves, and bifurcations to aid in accurate needle placement. (AccuVein Inc, 2022). It is the first and only device that can visualize veins and does not require calibration. With three brightness settings and a color mode display, the user is able to customize the image to their own preference and work environment. All in all it allows for better site assessment made decisions, improved catheter placement, and an enhanced experience for the patient (Accuvein Inc, 2022).

IV placement is a crucial element in the medical field and I think something we sometimes overlook as just a quick simple task. This is a learned skill by nurses and varies immensely from patient to patient. With how much the healthcare world is evolving and how many new devices we see day to day, I am surprised a handheld device like this one hasn't been implemented before. I have used the AccuVein on my unit and personally feel that the pro's outweigh the con's on this device. It allows for less IV sticks, increased accuracy, and overall a better experience for the patient. I work on an oncology unit, and IV's aren't as common of a skill on our unit due to our patients having central line access. It is fairly easy to use once you have received the training and allows for an increased confidence with inserting IV's to our patients whose veins have been affected by chemotherapy. The AccuVein has made a positive impact in my healthcare journey and I think it will continue to do so for other healthcare facilities.

My top strength being futuristic will aid in accepting the new device and adapting to a new way of inserting IV's. I think my strengths of positvity and includer will be beneficial in promoting the device to the unit and encouraging them to partake in the training. It can be hard to encourage nurses to try a new way of doing things especially whenever they have been doing things the same way for a very long time, so by taking responsibilty of the new device I will be able to positively make an impact on my coworkers and my team!

Amelia - Adaptability: She will be good at accepting the change and "going with the flow." She will be a leader in the group and somebody that the other team members will look up to.
Carter - Communication: He will be good at presenting the information to the team and understanding how the new devices works through and through.
Louis - Learner: He will be crucial to learning and practicing using the new device. His knowledge in the device will be very beneficial for the team to look to for encouragement and expertise.
Andrew - Activator: He will be good at setting up rolling out the new device to the staff. He will ensure that everybody is involved and actively going through the training in a timely manner.
Rose - Relator: She is crucial to the team by ensuring everybody's concerns about the device are addressed and reassured that it is okay to have reservations initially. She will be a very important component to ensuring the device doesn't be put on the back burner.
