-Skekerjian (1991) notes in the Uncommon Genius that creative people must be willing to go beyond the current level of experiences and expertise that is present in their field.
-As a top neurologist in her field, Monje had to step out and develop her own knowledge and and practices on how to provide better treatment options for children with brain cancer.
-In the video linked above, Monje is quoted as saying, "I was astonished that there was not a lot of information or treatment currently out there" (MacArthur Interview, 2021).
-In her MacArthur Fellowship focus page, Monje notes that she had to go beyond what she had previously been taught about cancer in order to discover more effective treatment options (MacArthur Interview, 2021).
