Sudan has developed national action plans, such as the National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), to outline strategies for climate action.

Sudan's National Adaptation Plan (NAP) of 2016 identified actions to protect water resources and reduce vulnerability to climate change in all 18 states of Sudan. In terms of mitigation, the international authorities around the world have been indulged in the act of promoting renewable energy.

Initiatives: The green climate fund association has been one of the global organizations aims to develop wind and solar energy.

In terms of Adaptation, UNDP and UNEP programs have been constructing infrastructure resistant to extreme weather events and enhancing early warning systems.

“In addition to emergency life-saving responses, UNHCR strives to build the resilience of individuals to withstand re-occurring shocks,” said Johann Siffointe of UNHCR. “For example, we provide livelihood and education programmes, and currently in Bossaso, we are working with our partners to relocate vulnerable persons from a flood-prone settlement for internally displaced people, to a secure site where they will be provided with transitional shelter.”

NATIONAL:

WFP, the largest humanitarian agency in Somalia, saves lives by providing food and nutrition assistance to people in crisis. WFP works both directly and through over 100 partners, even in areas where insecurity makes access challenging. Somalia is also home to WFP’s largest use of anticipatory action in Africa, helping drought-affected households to prepare for a potential fourth poor rainy season with cash transfers and an information campaign. WFP is only able to provide food assistance to less than half of the people most in need.

To face the climate emergency, the somali government established the national ministry of environment and climate change (MoECC) in August 2022, with the mandate of advancing sustainable development, eradicating poverty and developing a climate-resilient economy. First of all, a developed economy will allow the country to fund research and development toward sustainable infrastructure and development. Secondly, it can help with the overall economy of the country, allowing them to participate in global initiatives.

This is an example of mitigation, as we are aiming to mitigate the issues by visualizing and implementing these ideals.

Supporting weather forecasting and climate modelling: The UK Met Office is collaborating with the Sudanese government to improve weather prediction and climate modeling through the 'Adapt for Environment and Climate Resilience Project' (ADAPT!) This helps Sudanese authorities anticipate extreme weather events and plan accordingly.

2. Enhancing adaptation planning: The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) works closely with Sudan on its National Adaptation Plan (NAP). This plan outlines strategies for integrating climate change considerations into national and regional development processes.

3. Building resilience through ecosystem restoration: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) are collaborating on a project to restore ecosystems in South Sudan (although this is a separate country, it highlights the kind of project undertaken internationally).
