The conflict in the justice system's quest for finality and the ever changing nature of science
DNA analysis was introduced to the criminal justice system in the 1980s and has helped exonerate many innocent people. The results of forensic analysis techniques such as hair microscopy, bite mark comparisons, firearm tool mark analysis, shoe comparisons and blood typing that were accepted as reliable early on  are now under serious scrutiny. Many have been found to be unreliable and inadmissible as evidence. Reliable forensic techniques are still subject to human interpretation and identification, so there is always the potential for error.

They also point out that witness testimony pointed to a second suspect with short dreadlock hair, Leighton at the time had short cut hair but they found hair and a razor in a news paper at the home when they went to go arrest Leighton and they immediately assumed he cut off his locs and flushed them. We look into the beginning and how the police immediately claimed negative theory of Leighton flushing hair to fill in the blank of where the long loc hair have gone. Their original eye witness, also she claims she was 80% sure that Leighton was the second shooter but weeks later she picked another man instead of Leighton Hays. Even with the lack of evidence the focus on the hair was enough for the jury to convict Leighton Hay for the crime. Innocence Canada immediately took up the case and went directly at the lack of evidence such as the type of hair found at the house was not come from the scalp but from the face. Originally the Crown didn't want to allow the hair to be tested which was very eye opening to me. We also learned more about him having schizophrenia which has gotten worse with his time in prison and how him as a human being is not the same person and his mind and health as weakened over time.
