Most children’s speech sound development follows a typical pattern. It is normal for children to replace some of the more difficult sounds with sounds which are easier to say. For example 'tar' for 'car' or 'poon' for 'spoon.'

However some children’s speech sounds may develop more slowly or in an unusual way. For example ‘har’ for car or ‘oo’ for spoon, ay-ee for baby. These children may need extra help to develop their speech sounds.

There are different stages to work through, which include both listening to and producing speech sounds. It is important that the child is confident at each stage before moving onto the next.

LEGO® therapy is a collaborative play therapy (developed by Dr Daniel LeGoff, USA) where children work in pairs or teams of three to build LEGO®models. The concept was originally designed for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but it can also be beneficial for children with other

social communication difficulties and anxiety disorders.

The method aims to increase independent child-led communication. It consists of sustained, consistent turn-taking whilst developing collaboration with peers to achieve a shared task withinset rules…at the same time as having fun!

They include pictures, symbols, objects, gestures or actions, signs and written words (just to name a few).

Imagine you are putting together a tricky bit of furniture. To help you put it together, you might look at symbols showing what tools you need and diagrams showing how everything slots together. You might also read the instructions and watch a video online to see how to do it. These are all examples of visual support- things we can look at to help us understand.

We find visual supports helpful and so do children, especially if they have challenges with learning to talk and understand words

We understand that all children develop at their own pace, and that we’re all learning from birth. When it’s time to start school, some children will need more help than others.

There are key skills that schools expect children to be learning before their first day. Practising these will make your child’s journey to Reception as positive as possible.

If your child is already at nursery, in pre-school, or with a childminder, those professionals will work with you and your child to help get them ready.

There’s lots you can do at home to build your child’s confidence and independence, helping them feel emotionally and practically prepared to start school.

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

DLD is a very common condition affecting 7.5% of children – that’s an average of 2 or 3 in every classroom. But it is little known and poorly understood. The reasons for this are unclear but we know that DLD is often confused with other conditions. People tend to assume that language difficulties will be obvious, but they are often quite subtle and hard to recognise without experience or training. Furthermore, children with DLD are often very good at ‘masking’ their difficulties.
