John Berkeley, a Baron and an English royalist soldier, politician and diplomat, of the Bruton branch of the Berkeley family. He was friends with James, Duke of York, as well as Sir George Carteret. Sir George Carteret was one of the privy council, vice-chamberlain, and treasurer of the navy. He was a personal friend of James, Duke of York. The purpose for founding this colony was for freedom and tolerance for the Quakers of England. Some other common jobs to have were merchants, tavern keepers, town clerks, ministers, school teachers, fishermen, sailors, and shipbuilders. At the time there was no slavery. The people of the New Jersey Colony were better off than some. They were friendly and had good relations with the local Lenni-Lenape. New Jersey had tolerance for all religions, this included Jews, Quakers, Lutherans, Catholics, and more. Schooling in New Jersey was based on religion and money. If you did not have enough money, then you wouldn't be able to attend. They enjoyed religious tolerance, but they went to church schools. The school you attended was based on your religion. Homelife was very important to the colonists. Every night after work, the farmers would come home to a lovely cooked meal made by their wives. Women would have fun every so often by getting together with pieces of fabric and trading it around, kind of like how kids trade cards. Horse racing was very popular back then, with most of the men participating. Kids would hold corn-husking bees in their free time. Kids would talk a flirt while holding these bees.
