That was a fantastic presentation unfortunately applicable only in Model Schools, as the vast majority of Schools have no funds to proceed in such investments, they are not equipped with smart boards, their internet connections are slow, their desktop computers are outdated and many other issues . Plus there is legislation that prohibits the use of smart phones within school borders.

Panagiota's presentation was very good but I think that State Schools need a lot of time and funds to get to this point.

My school has a good IT infrastructure, there are 5 computer labs, plus every department has a computer or laptop, a smart board and free internet connection at good speed, however it is mostly during the IT class that this infrastructure is used, for the rest of the teachers it means too much effort and time so the lessons are done without this support.

Great presentation, a lot of information in a compact format. During the presentation I was thinking about my school, which decided (in 2003) to have a pure IT guy instead of a teacher (overworked?) taking care of IT-issues as well as work in the classroom. One of our teachers has the role as pedagogical IT resource. This is good, cause I am not in the classroom, and have little experience with teaching , I just help to make IT work :).

The presentation gives a glimpse of what an ict administrator should do, offering a service to teachers with a good variety of different services as internet access, computer labs and so on. A ict administrator also has to look to the future and plan for things to come, such as byod. Unfortunately, there is usually not enough time to set out a future proof plan. So, we mostly are stuck in fixing and maintaining a current situation.

My school has got some classes with Interactive White Boards and projectors, some classes have got new E-boards and laptop computers. We also have 3 labs: a multimedia lab with computer desktops and a projector, a video room with a 2x2 m screen and a led projector, a room with an Interactive Monitor, a laptop computer and tablets. We won European funds to set up ICT in our school, but actually funds are very difficult to find.

A couple of years ago we created a plan to optimize and secure our network infrastructure. We are still working on the deployment of it. Mostly time is an issue. We just don't have enough manpower to keep everything running and change everything at once. In a few years we will move into a new building. Hopefully, then things will get better...

ICT in schools is great for students, teachers and administration. But, not all schools have necessary equipment. It is nice to hear that there are schools in which students and have teachers have tablets. In my school we have PC’s in every classroom, but we don’t have possibility for the wireless network nor LCD projectors in every classroom. We don’t even have speakers for all PCs.

Personal devices use should be allowed to save money: machines quickly become old and the school can't easely replace them. Furthermore, students use to communicate through the social networks, so they live indifferentely in a inside and in an outside school reality. ICT is like some people said, an umbrella underneath which we can find any kind of communication device but also all kind of services and applications that we can access. When I was watching this video I copy one of the questions she shares: What do we want to achieve using ICT in the school? I think this is the key question and the answer has to be given by the school community. Then, we can start solving the technical challenges, training teachers and implementing the plan we decide to achieve those shared goals. Many schools have been left behind in the development of appropriate ICT infrastructure. Many schools have not got the skills required to develop an ICT strategy and to implement this strategy. Such schools when trying to catch up have to make enormous efforts to implement even basic ICT infrastructure. There is a danger that the focus on this effort can take away from the core business of schools which of course is teaching and learning. Schools need support from appropriate organizations such as the state who are not just interested in selling hardware. Good presentation which illustrates the strength of good underlying ICT infrastructure in facilitating teaching and learning and also administration.

Very valid presentation - Vision is the key. It must come from the top and there must be "buy in" at all levels. You can have brilliant infrastructure and equipment but without pedagogic vision and teacher commitment there will be a poor return from investment.

It was a perfect presentation, because it gives us the engagement of the pedagogical practices and the ICT. In my school many teachers of different objects use the ICT to do their lessons. For example, some of them use IWBs or projectors for their presentations, others use the ICT only for present interesting videos or films about their objects and this school year we installed an e-learning platform (OpenEclass) for the collaboration with our students in various objects (Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology). The major problem is that the teachers have not enough knowledge about ICT, and they don’t feel confident to use them. So, specific courses must be implemented for them.

It's not a great video for the image quality and language speaking. In Italy school not exist a role about ICT Administrator but only the great disponibility of teacher. I think that is now necessary foresee this istitutional role in school because the complexity about LAN (in this video this is very explicit) required very specialized person and not technical improvised.

For the teacher in the class room to use the technology in their pedagogical method, they must trust it. It needs to be of sufficient quality that they know it will work when they want it. If they cannot trust it they will not take the chance.
Using ICT methodologies has in my experience been enthusiastically discussed, but when it comes to delivery the problems occur. It requires a financial and time investment from the management. Educators need time to investigate, evaluate and even trial using ICT in different ways in their classes. They need to build their confidence before they will attempt usage in their examinable classes. The curriculum is too full to experiment with new methods when we have tried and tested on that will work, what if the experiment (using ICT) does not work?
Personally I have seen this in my own school. When the network and data projectors became more stable the usage went up. The nature of the ICT support issues changed and became more complex. The projectors were seen as useful to the class, they are used seamlessly with other equipment, because they are there and were tried over tim (about 2 year), now they cry when they don't work.
Time to expand the vision of the teacher is needed to get the buy in needed to incorporate ICT in their learning and teaching.

"Technology will not make bad teaching good, however technology used in the correct way will enhance good teaching." This phrase is used at many of the ICT training courses I have attended.The problem for many teachers is a fear of doing something wrong and at the start it can be very time consuming trying to prepare presentations etc.In Ireland I feel more use could be made of the "Croke Park Hours" to up skill teachers in the area of ICT.

Very interesting presentation. It is necessary schools reflect about what they want from ICT. We are educating students for the 21st century century (we are in there from sixteen years ago) but lots of teachers mantain ICT far away from there classes. Some of the times a non-well configured network incentivate teachers to do what they always had done. In that situation they know everithing go well. If the internet doesn´t work, if the computer doesn´t turno on all the class wll stop. A good IT infrastruture is the base for an ICT classroom integration.

In Italy things have changed since the so called PNSD: the national plan to digitalize schools. Schools have been called to join many projects in order to receive money and build new ICT settings.

There are some splendid points raised in this presentation.However, it is now becoming apparent to me that there is some ambiguity about the title ICT administrator in the context of the said presentation. Does administrator mean tasks involving the physical resources, functionality and infrastructure in the school? The promotion of teaching and learning is the primary purpose of a school. It appears to me that an ICT co-ordinator and not an ICT administrator is responsible for the fulfilment of this primary purpose. Are there teachers out there who are both?

I also have to disagree with the premise that "the school vision is a basic component of its ICT infrastructure" To me the school vision is the primary over riding element, indeed, pillar of a school's philosophy and ethos.

Our integrated ICT school vision is based on the following five pillars.

1. Leadership.

2.ICT Curriculum Integration.

3. ICT School Culture.

4. Continual Professional Development for Academic and Ancillary Staff.

5. Adequate resources, best possible connectivity and infrastructure.

To me the administrator's role should relate to
procurement and functional areas, based on assessment of the network needs as rightly pointed out, such as network services, network type, network structure, network servers,applications, security,safety, growth and capacity planning.

As Laura and Chiara have already said, in Italy things are changing fast. My school recently acquired a new mobile laboratory with 30 tablets, but now we have to persuade teachers to use them... We have great plans for the future, but it seems to me that we have to plan carefully what we are going to do and ask ourselves more deeply what aims and goals we want to achieve about learning. Only after this we will be able to decide what kind of infrastructure and devices are needed.

thanks to the PNSD things are changing more rapidly also in Italy in the last two years. Technology plays a more important role in school praxis but nevertheless ICTs cannot change school if there isn't a complete interaction between innovating methodology and technology. Of course they can help school and school environment to become more flexible and to correspond in a more effective way to the needs of our students who are faced with an external word which is changing more rapidly than in the past. What Panagiota says is very interesting and correct. The introduction of technology should have been more structured in Italian school, I mean, sometimes we have had the possibility to implement the ICT infrastructures , but only a few teachers were aware of using technology in their didactical teaching. Others felt it as an obligation and they refused it. I think that teachers should be brought step by step to a new way of managing lessons. I'm thinking about teaching a new language for example is much more effective vision infrastructure. I don't mean other subjects can not improve them teaching with vision of infrastructure, obviously they can, but the difference of goal between to use it and do not use it could be less strong.

There are lots of interesting questions to reflect on, presented in this video. In our case, as a Public school, this reflection was expected (or supposed) to be done by the Educational Department, investing and providing the equipment to schools according a previous plan. Unfortunately, that has not been the case in many occasions, and we have received in schools very expensive and useless equipments (as interactive digital boards, for example) without the necessary training itinerary for teachers or maintenance or integration in the Curriculum. Politics is like that, and ICT equipment is sometimes much more a question of headlines in newspapers, than to the real needs of the school.

Some key issues raised here. I have experienced first hand the situation where a school has tried to implement ICT without a clear (and shared) vision: the result was fragmented implementation and a complete under-utilisation of the technology. I agree that ICT as a subject should be added to the curriculum even at a primary school level and not just used to support teaching and learning. We are implementing an ICT curriculum in our school and have adapted a document called the NCCA Framework which is a structured approach to using ICT in curriculum and assessment in schools. It sets out clear learning objectives and outcomes in ICT at various levels allowing for progression from year to year.

As I work in the same country, I agree with Ana (from Zaragoza) who said that some schools have great equipments but their teachers have not being trained for using all that technology in a productive way. So we tend to use computers and tablets just as a more attractive way of presenting the contents of the curriculum. I'm currently working on our ICT plan for the next years. I use the Dutch model, 'Balance model' as a guideline. It basicly says to get to ICT use and to effect of ICT use, 4 components need to be in balance. 2 human: vision and competence, 2 infrastructural: hardware and software. I think that in the present day, ICT is not a subject or an infrastructure, but a framework of thinking and planning. At the same time there are various levels of planning: we have to plan devices, networks, online learning environments, curriculum integration.
Computing itself can be viewed as a separate subject or a set of skills that can be used in any subject.
Teachers must be proficient enough to be able to make effective decisions, but they shouldn't be technicians.

Nowadays we have 70 computers allocated in 3 computer labs, a computer in each classroom connected to the wire network, as well as wireless access in all rooms, which allows connectivity for teachers and students by using their own devices and 24 school tablet.

For next future, the plan is the to:

1. use ICT to promote new teaching methods, such as cooperative learning, collaborative learning, flipped classroom, sometime in collaboration with schools in other countries through e-Twinning too;

2. enhance wireless to facilitate the access to all students simultaneously;

3. encourage the use of students' devices and this requires a greater use of cloud in the next future.

One problem I see is that the firms who make the software for the applications have a profit motive and do not have the learning needs of the student at the core.
