Alter the rubric to make it more open ended. Still have the original requirements but make it more effort based. Students that still did the work and met the requirements would still get their appropriate grade, but the student would not fail. The student may get a C but not an F.
We want to encourage imagination and enthusiasm for learning, but still want to guide students to the requested requirements.

First, we would individually meet with the student and give them positive reenforcement. An example being " I saw that you were really engaged in this project, what made you this way / what did you like about it? " Continue the conversation about the project by asking if they understood the rubric and what their thought process were. This can give you an idea if they purposely went against the rubric or just misunderstood or interpreted it differently. Focus on the area that they struggled the most with and need the most help with. Try to find a time during the school day for individual attention to work on the skills that are lacking. Make clear that you need to see effort, and there grade reflect that in the revisions. In the future, double check with the student to ensure they understand the rubric and can follow the directions.

The student does not get an F. I would include constructive criticism to build student competence on the rubric and have a one to one follow up with the student explaining my criticisms and providing support to the student. In addition, I would have each student in the class stand and discuss what they feel the importance of this project so that each student can view other perspectives of this project and build ideas for future projects.

We will give extra credit to everyone that showed that they put work and thought into their project but the grade according to the rubric will stand. Other students would be sensitive to any perception of favoritism or grade inflation. We would also have a private conversation with Matt encouraging his effort and giving him direction for future work.
