Rest is almost always required for a sprained ankle to properly heal; a full recovery may take weeks or months. Depending on the severity of the sprain, physical therapy may also be recommended by a physician. Immediately after the event where the ankle is sprained, ice helps to reduce swelling in the area. To prevent re-injury of the ankle, tape/an ankle brace may be used.
