This shows both his early life, and what he looks like now. His early life affected him physically, emotionally, and psychologically.

It also contributes to the fact that giving birth was made harder for the wife due to being malno when she was younger in the camps.

"No- I don't follow baseball, I'm afraid." Since baseball is extremely popular in the United States, this provides a detail of where they are. This shows that since they are in America, things are likely much easier. The people he had encountered were nice to him.

Since he and his wife had grown up "behind barbed wire", it could greatly affect how he is now. At the end of the story his wife says "the couldn't kill us, could they, Heinz?" He replies with ""No." "And her we are, alive as we can be." They came out triumphant against the Nazis, unlike their families. Both of them gave up so much, and are extremely grateful they were able to have a child.

Knetchmanns background of him and his wife going through the holocaust together and surviving gives them both such a different perspective of what they are going through in the story. They are so much more grateful than Souza that their baby is born healthy and alive despite what they had to go through and they are happy to be in a free country. Their first child also died so it is very stressful but once the baby is born the joy is endless.

I think there's kinda two themes to this story. One is to be grateful and the other is to be kinda to those who share their good news with you. If they are elated, it's for a good reason you may not know about so just be happy for them too. You never know what some people have been through and how much your reaction can affect people.

I think the theme is overcoming the past. In this story. Heinz and his wife Avchen are both Holocaust survivors. They were in the camps, along with their families and luckily they made it out. During the Holocaust, millions of people were killed and knowing the possibility of being one of those people was likely extremely nerve-wracking. It was mentioned that Heinz lost his family in the Holocaust. However, here they are in America welcoming a child. To be able to do that is amazing. A lot of people weren't able to. Heinz and his wife overcame their past, and was able to start w new and much improved life, in America.

I agree with Jade on the fact that Heinz and his wife growing up behind bars affected his characterization. We both wrote that. That detail is very important as it creates not just characterization, but can add to the theme, Jade also put very good details to help support her point when writing,

Zoe explained her answers really well and brought different details to my attention like the baseball scene and I really liked how she said the theme was overcoming the past, I think that really fits this story
