It states that "and nearly opposite another wigged gentleman with his hands in his pockets, whose whole attention... seemed to be concentrated on the ceiling of the court" (Dickens 63-64). This is showing that Carton isn't paying attention to what he should be and that he isn't caring about the court case too much either.</div>]]></description>

He does all of Stryver's work, the 'greatest' lawyer in all of London. Another strength of his is that he is sometimes a very caring person. He shows multiple times throughout the book that he actually cares for Lucie very deeply because he loves her.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Sydney continues to work in Stryver's shadow because that's the way he's always worked, not taking credit. In the text it states, "'Up one minute and down the next; now in spirits and now in despondency!'" (Dickens 91). He lets Stryver talk to him like that because that's what everyone does to him because they think of him as a drunk. The thing that is holding him back is that he grew up like that, so it's in his nature to do things for others, making him hold himself back.</div>]]></description>

"The object of all this staring and blaring, was a young man of about five-and-twenty, well-grown and well-looking, with a sun-burnt cheek and a dark eye. His condition was that of a young gentleman"(Dickens 55).  The description shows that he is a calm person even under great pressure, and he likes to make himself look as good as he can and to act as composed as possible.</div>]]></description>

In the courtroom, Lucie tells the judge that he was a kind person and would never have tried to hurt either her or her father, "The prisoner was as open in his confidence with me...as he was kind, and good, and useful to<br>my father" (Dickens 63). This is showing how much respect others have for him  and how all of his efforts to make himself look the best he can and to be composed makes him a very respectable figure.</div>]]></description>

Charles is the light because of how put-together he is and Carton is the dark because of how far he's fallen.
