PLN's have been around since before the internet; but now with the advances in technology, it is easier for educators to connect across distances with their professional peers, and others, to gain or share valuable information.

PLN's are typically free for their members. While some may cost money, in order to be more specialized and be rid of advertisements, others cost nothing and can still be just as influential to connections

Your PLN is controlled by you. They all have security and privacy settings that you can alter to best suit ones needs as an educator. Because of those settings, you can then make sure that the information you are sending and receiving is beneficial to your cause.

As a new teacher, one can feel quite overwhelmed and even lonely. PLN's help solve problems that arise from such feelings. By creating ones own network, they can connect with mentors from anywhere in the world. They also allow for the sharing of resources that can help make teaching easier, be it through new ideas for activities, advice on how to handle difficult situations not covered in the "How To Be Teacher" handout, and engaging lesson plans. Not only this; but, the also allow one to connect to coworkers and potential friends to help one through life itself.

Another instance of a Professional Learning Network benefit is connecting educators with the parents of students and the students themselves. PLN's can be beneficial for everyone involved. Parents can be assured that their children are being well educated by actually seeing what they are learning. It also helps students who may need technology to learn better or remember what their homework is. PLNs can also be used to share resources related to the subject matter being taught; shared by anyone, students and teachers. Stepping outside of the classroom, educators and parents can be connected to know progress in school, important dates (PTA meetings), sporting and fundraiser events, health and safety concerns (allergies),etc.
