1.

Humanity has two definitions: 1) talking about people in general, 2) to be kind and thoughtful towards others.

The sentence can be interpreted as everyone striving to become successful and happy. Modern Times is based on this liberal way of thinking, and having the American Dream.

It could also be interpreted as the capitalist’s suppression of people from the low classes in the society by turning them into slaves in order to gain more fortune themselves.

2.

Due to the tramp’s low social status, he has a hard time finding a good job, and having his freedom needed to establish himself with a wife and a home.

3.

The tramp is a highly-motivated person and has his spirits high. Not all the decisions he make are completely wise and legal but he does these things in order to achieve his dreams in terms of living.

22.

The industrialization has brought positive and negative things. It has made people dream because nothing seems impossible, and it has increased the welfare of many million peoples’ lives. On the other hand, it has brought materialism to the world which has had some negative effects. A lot of basic human feelings has been taken away from the world, and made it more superficial.

In which respect does today’s society differ from the society of that time?

- Industriel revolution
- Technology
- Better working terms

8. At the end, the giri and the tramp walk towards the horizon turning their backs on modem society. They have not found happiness, but they haven’t lost hope either. In your opinion is it a happy or unhappy ending? Happy or unhappy - it’s up to you.

- An unhappy ending would be, if the girl got arrested, and they would get separated and never see each other again.

22. In one of the first scenes at the factory, the tramp is used as guinea-pig in a lunch machine. What feelings does the scene raise in you? Is it fun or does it make you feel sorry for the tramp?

We don’t like the fact that he were forcefully subject to being a guinea-pig - owing to the president’s lack of considerations when it comes to basic human rights .

18. In the flock of sheep in the first scene there is a black sheep. It is obvious to conclude that the tramo is the black sheep. Why would the tramp be a black sheep?

The Tramp is seen as an Irregular man hvor lacks common sense and thus can’t comprehend simple tasks and as such he is seen as the black sheep (the word black sheep also refers to the odd man out which is not always a good thing to be, in the old times the word was used against a person/family member as a disgrace.)

    10. Yes We think that the movies are timeless, because they are easy to relate to. The messages are everyday material, and the small short movies is about the feelings and struggles that you front everyday. Sadness, humiliation, happiness, arrogance etc. The movies is overdramatised, the way thet his feelings are exaggerated by the music. Its about independence

    11. because the workers felt like they were a sheep in a flock of sheep. They were just doing what they was told to. But also for the reason to make the movie timeless. We think the silence make it timeless

12. Also because the workers felt like they were a sheep in a flock of sheep. They were just doing what they was told to.

22. Yes we do think so. Because we got way more opportunities today.

Charlie Chaplin questions. Slim og Mathilda

13.

Unlike the other workers at the assembly line, why does the tramp run into so much trouble trying to keep up with the pace of the machines? How do the other workers manage?

Because the workers are tired, and can't keep up for so many hours. Because it is hard work, but they try take short breaks.

14. How would you feel about working at an assembly line?

We would find it extremely uniform to spend all of our hours in an assembly line. It would be boring, to do the exact same thing all day. We feel compassion with the workers, and we see the work getting automatic, which seems cynical.

15. Do you think the assembly line of the real world can be compared to that of the movie?

No, you can compare the assembly line to the real world, because now a days you don`t use the same labour compared to the movie. In the modern world you use machines instead of humans, because that it is not human being to do the same exercise repeated over and over, therefor Charlie Chaplin demonstrate and are against of the industry world.

22

Do you think that industrialisation with its inventions and technology has made human beings happier? Substantiate your answer.

You could say that people have gotten happier in general but technology has at times taken over people’s lives and made them do unnecessary things. as mentioned before People have gotten happier in general as technology has made everything easier and less time consuming, it has also made everything go to the next level regarding inventions. To summarize it people have gotten a lot happier but in rare occasions people get screwed over by their addiction to technology.
