March 3, 1820
A decision made to ease tensions between slave and free states, it was proposed by Henry Clay, that allowed Missouri to be a slave state, and Maine to be a free state, thus ending arguments over weather Missouri should be free or slave, without giving one side more power. It also stopped slavery from spreading over 36' 30' latitude in the Louisiana purchase. This helped tensions for a time, but the south was still unsatisfied, and wanted slavery to be able to expand.

November, 1832
A crisis that started when a "Tariff of Abominations" was passed. It raised import taxes, which angered the south. John C. Calhoun argued that states had the right to nullify, or declare void, any law that they disagreed with. This led to President Jackson sending troops down to South Carolina by passing the Force Bill. This issue caused the south to feel unheard and caused an increase of sectionalist feelings, as the south began to feel even more like the north was against them. This ignited tensions between the north and the south as the south was resentful of the tax, which benefited the north. It made them feel like the rights of states were being taken away, and that the right to own slaves might be taken away next, which made them start to want to secede.

It was rejected as one whole bill, so it was split up into parts, so representatives could vote only for the parts they liked. It was proposed by Henry Clay, and it added California as a free state, and had the other territories have popular sovereignty, which let them vote on being a slave or free state. It banned the slave trade in Washington DC, and introduced the fugitive slave act. It appeased by both the north and the south for a while, and while tensions were still rising, secession was put off.

January 29, 1850
The fugitive slave act was passed as part of the Compromise of 1850 in order to appease the south. It required that escaped slaves be captured and brought back to the plantation they escaped from. It was extremely unpopular in the north, as it finally forced the north to actively take part in slavery, which they could previously ignore. It put off secession for a few years, as the south was happy that slavery was being protected, but they grew unhappy at how unpopular this law was in the north.

It was much more prevalent in the North, and was one of the main conflicts between north and south. Garrison, who wrote an abolitionist newspaper, The Liberator, was one important abolitionist, as was Frederick Douglas, a former slave, and the Grimke Sisters, who were also feminists, and from the south. This movement angered the south who felt like the north would try to take their slaves, which was one of the main reasons the south seceded.
