Thursday 4th May was the date the Headmistress and the teacher, Miss Paola, told me to start my observations. The assigned group was 4 years old. The name of them is "Ladybirds". Needless to say that the previous night I could barely sleep. I knew that the following day I'd have the opportunity to collect enough classroom data useful for my later practicum.
It was a long night and when, finally, morning arrived, I put on my red pinafore and drove towards school.
got there twenty minutes before starting time. It was dark yet and only two or three people of the staff were already there.
Parents and kids began to arrive and greeted me kindly. This made me feel comfortable and anxiety slowly faded.

First Day ( May, 4th )

I met the teacher and walked together to the classroom . Children entered the classroom as they arrived. They smiled to me and asked my name.
When all of them had arrived the teacher greeted the group and introduced me as an observer of their activities. It might have sounded ordinary to them because nobody asked or said anything! I took a seat in a corner and the class started.
The teacher asked them to stand up next to the wall (as they usually do) and they sang the Hello song. After that, the kids went directly to their tables.
The teacher reminded them about an activity their were dealing with the previous class. She asked them to say "here" when she called out their names to hand in the sheet of paper to continue colouring (instructions given in L1). While the pupils were colouring the teacher prepared the computer, connected all the wires and loudspeakers without looking at them.
After fifteen minutes she collected the papers asking pupils about the colours they had used (L2) and told them they had to sit in front of the board to watch a video (L1) . The teacher interrupted the video three or four times to ask about the images. She asked "What animal is this?" pointing to some animals, then: "These are flags. What colour are they?" Children answered the questions. The video finished and the teacher asked questions again and she explained some details in L1.
The teacher asked children to make a circle to finish the lesson . They sang the "Goodbye " song.

After this first observation I could see that the group is quite calm and responds to the teacher. Except for one or two boys that tried to walk around during the lesson, the rest of the group worked well, sat properly and shared space and objects without questioning.
The video watched was "Around the world in 80 days" as they were going to see a theatre play related to that. It's a presentation of a musical by the company Artspot the following week

Kids arrived and took their places next to the wall after leaving their coats and bags on their pegs. The teacher waited for all of them and started to sing the "Hello " song. The children responded enthusiastically.
The teacher asked them to go to their tables to start the activities.
There was a problem with technology and finally the teacher could play the video she had prepared. It was a new "Hello" song ( very long) and children clapped and sang hello following the teacher's model.
Immediately, the teacher told pupils they were going to watch the video "Around the world in 80 days" again. (the one they had watched on 4th May). Children watched from their tables. The teacher paused and clarified . The video was colourful but it had the script written over the images and it was difficult to see them clearly. The teacher stopped the film and asked questions related to the animals and fruits that appeared in it.
After watching the video, the children received a white sheet of paper and the teacher asked them to draw what they remembered about the story they had seen. While pupils were working the teacher monitored their job. She moved around the tables and asked children about their productions.
When they finished they handed their papers out and the teacher asked them to sit next to the wall. Then she decided to move them so that they could see the screen (the board).
Once again, they watched a video. This time a "Goodbye" song (long and with too many actions).
The video finished and the teacher asked pupils to stand next to the wall to wait for their teacher.

My first class at kinder finished and I felt happy but exhausted. I tried to use L2 all the time but it wasn´t effective at all. Why? I think the children are not used to too much L2 and I misunderstood "as much as possible".
Kids don´t have the routine incorporated yet and thet seem to loose interest when they don't understand the language. However, things were good enough to fulfill the planning.
In my view I should improve the initial moment and reinforce routine.

Here is a picture of the puppet I made for the class and one of the fingerpuppets I prepared as a present for them . I think I'm going to hand them in on the last meeting

I delivered the pieces of a puzzle to each group of kids, and, at first, they wanted to keep them individually, then I explained it was group work and they had to be a team. Finally, they could do the ctivity successfully and I felt satisfied when, monitoring them, I realized they were actually working collaboratively.
