If I read this correctly I see that she was beaten but more hurtfully she was raped. Morrison sets the mood with the diction. As Denver and Sethe describe the house to Paul they describe it in such an eerie and deathly way by using words like rebuke, lonely, mad and died or death. Morrison is using two literary devices in one set comparison that really stresses the like and dislike of Sethe.
