The muscular system is one of the Systems of Support (SOS). Muscles are important to our bodies, they make us able to move, eat, breathe, and speak. There are two main "groups" of muscles, one is voluntary the other is involuntary. Voluntary muscles are the muscles that we control, an example of this would be raising an arm, we are able to tell our brain if we want to do that. The other type is involuntary, an example would be your heart you do not have to tell your body to do it.

Paul and Carly are a married couple living with myotonic dystrophy (a type of Muscular Dystrophy). After finally getting a diagnosis for their diseases both of them felt a weight lifted off of their shoulders after finally knowing what was "wrong" with them. Paul talks about one night he was brought to the hospital because of an extremely high heart rate, "during one of the tests my heart stopped, and they brought me back. The doctor didn't know what was causing it, but they decided to put in a defibrillator" Paul then says that at the age of 32, he was diagnosed with myotonic dystrophy. Since this disease affects different parts of the body both Carly and Paul have to see many different doctors. Symptoms of this disease can vary from person to person, for example, Carly has difficulty with her speech, dyslexia, and excessive sleepiness, on the other hand, Paul has to have a pacemaker (sometimes even a ventilator) because his heart muscles are weak. To this day Carly works in a bakery, although Paul is no longer able to work, he stays home and takes care of their 16-year-old son. Paul and Carly are living proof that you are still able to live life to the fullest even with myotonic disease.

https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/musculardystrophy/stories.html#:~:text=At%20age%2030%2C%20Carly%20has,more%20strength%20in%20his%20muscles.
