This event began in 1936 when a group of military leaders, led by General Francisco Franco, attempted to overthrow Spain’s democratic government. The coup was partially successful, splitting the country into two opposing sides: the Republicans, who supported the government, and the Nationalists, who supported Franco and authoritarian rule. The war was marked by intense fighting, atrocities on both sides, and international involvement, as Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy aided Franco, while the Soviet Union and international volunteers supported the Republicans. The conflict devastated Spain and ultimately led to a Nationalist victory in 1939, establishing Franco’s dictatorship for decades.

This event is important to history because the Spanish Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939, was important because it was a major conflict between democratic republicans and fascist forces led by General Francisco Franco. This war attracted international attention, with many foreign fighters and countries, such as Germany and Italy, supporting Franco’s Nationalists, while the Soviet Union and international brigades backed the Republicans. It highlighted the struggle between fascism and democracy in Europe before World War II, serving as a precursor to the larger conflict that would engulf the continent. The war resulted in a fascist dictatorship in Spain that lasted for decades and had a significant impact on the political landscape of Europe, influencing anti-fascist movements and shaping the policies of various nations during and after the war.

This deal shocked many people, as Germany and the Soviet Union had very different ideas and were not allies before. The pact secretly divided parts of Eastern Europe, including Poland, between them, so they could each take land without conflict. By agreeing to this, Germany was free to invade Poland without Soviet interference, which led to Britain and France declaring war on Germany and starting World War II. This pact also allowed the Soviet Union to take control of parts of Eastern Europe, increasing its influence.
