This quote shows the readers the superiority of Myrtle and how she thinks she is a richer being. It is very ironic with her way of thinking because of her true social class. 



“She was in the middle thirties, and faintly stout, but she carried her surplus flesh sensuously as some women can. Her face, above a spotted dress of dark blue crepe-de-chine, contained no facet or gleam of beauty, but there was an immediately perceptible vitality about her as if the nerves of her body were continually smouldering”(28).  “She had changed her dress to brown figured muslin, which stretched tight over her rather wide hips”(29).

This quote describes Myrtle's physical features and show why Tom finds Myrtle attractive. This also shows her openness in displayed her sexuality to Tom when it describes her dress stretched over her hips.
Socially, Myrtle’s personality in the novel demonstrates she wishes to climb the social status ladder with her looks and clothing.
