Although Israel is a very modern country, and very up to date with many customs, the gender roles may be the most regressed thing about the country.
In the workforce, women are represented equally to men. There has even been a female prime minister, Golda Meir, which is farther than even the united states has gotten. Every single citizen is also required to serve in the military for two years, including women.
However, in the Orthodox Jewish tradition women do not have these same rights. Women and men in certain areas follow the tradition cannot worship together, dance together, swim together, or walk on the same side walk together. Regarding the mandatory military service that all citizens must undergo, ultra orthodox Jews are exempt from it.
In Kibbutzim, which are communal settlements in rural Israel, women's roles have regressed. The jobs of being doctors and lawyers, have once more turned back into caring for the home and the children.

There are 3 main religions in Israel, Judaism with more than 75% of the population, Muslim, and Christianity. Israel is the holy land for all three religions and important to each in different ways.
Israel was created in 1948, after the second world war, and Jews wanted a homeland, or country. The United Nations finally allowed it, and it became the Jewish state. That is why most of the population is Jewish.
