"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan- like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it" (P3)

This picture represents the quote as the quote describes the woods, and living life in isolation, as well living a simple, forward life. The picture represents that too with the woods, also the ideals of the quote relate to transcendentalism as transcendentalism values nature, and simple, isolated living.

2a Reaction to Movie + Poem

The movie "Dead Poets Society" was quite interesting to me, I found it incredibly interesting as it took a pretty shady turn at the end of the movie. The ending was dark overall, there was no good ending, which makes me question is the movie attacking transcendentalism or supporting it? It may be a dumb question, but as the movie goes on, and the cast becomes more and more transcendental with their club, the more things go wrong, and eventually it ends in Neil's suicide because he can't express himself and pursue his passion. Although the rest of the cast does become more transcendental, overall, the movie ends pretty darkly, as for the poem, I found it kind of similar to the movie, as it questions the purpose of life, but instead of ending with suicide, it ends with Whitman giving a purpose to life.

What will my verse be? It's a question I've only recently asked myself, but its a rich question nonetheless that I can't say for certain. There are many verses I want to write for the world, I want to be a strong independent human being that can live on my own, without disrupting other people. I want to be a successful person with anything money can buy. But what I want most is to make the people around me smile. I want to be someone people are comfortable around, I want to be someone anyone can express themselves around, I want to make people smile.
