In what ways was this chunk a window or a mirror? Use the following questions to guide your response, but really we want to hear your personal thoughts and reactions to this chunk! Respond with at least four (4) sentences.

I can relate to Jeannette because I really admire my parents a lot, and there are times where they make mistakes and you honestly feel about it, just as Jeannette felt about her dad. So when I know my parents are doing something wrong you feel bad but when you're a child you cannot really do much other than just staying still. I have a lot of alcoholics in my family and they can sometimes get out of control and most of the times manage to harm there families, and its very similar to Rex addiction, since there time where the family sobers up, but they later can't handle the pressure and start doing there addiction again. I learned about the emotional struggle of loving a parent who is neglectful and untrustworthy, which I haven't personally experienced.

Choose: one (1) of the motifs and respond in at least four (4) sentences about how this motif is prevalent in this section.

Family

Motif: Disappointment

The motif of disappointment is very important in this Story especially since Jeannette has always hoped her father would change. Instead, he keeps letting her down with his actions, like his drinking. When she says she’s been “waiting for my whole life,” it shows how long she’s been waiting for something better. This isn't the only time where the father has disappointed the family.

Find a quote in this chunk that stood out to you. Please also include a picture or GIF to further describe this quote.

During the day Jeannette is in a taxi with her mother and she then hears her father " "I was sitting in the back of the taxi, looking out the window at the world, when I heard the words I had been waiting for my whole life. 'Dad's drunk,' my mother said." (Walls 2) This quote stands out to me because it shows the constant pain Jeannette feels with her father. Jeannette loves him but has to deal with his constant failures, and disappointment.

How do economic conditions determine the characters' lives?

In the glass castle the characters' lives are shaped by their need for money. They move a lot and struggle to meet basic needs, which causes a lot of riskiness. Their financial problems limit their opportunities, affecting their health, education, and their future decisions.

Does the work explicitly embrace or reject socialism?

In the Glass Castle Jeannette her parents refuse government help, pointing out issues like poverty and a need of support. Mainly the book focuses on Jeanette’s determination and ability to survive, rather than on political beliefs. It also shows her strength helped her overcome or over achieve her challenges.

Does the work criticize class structure?

The glass castle shows how poverty makes life harder and limits your chances in life. Jeanette family struggles with being poor, and the book shows how society doesn’t always help. While it’s not all about class, it shows how not being fair can affects people lives and especially in Jeanette’s situation.
