Xenia Elizabeth Chévez Calderón - 31-0565-2019. The book is about a couple of friends, Little Hans and Hughes Miller. Little Hans is described as a poor person who has a big heart. Little Hans is a farmer and lives with what he gets from the sales of his fruit, etc. Mr. Hughes Miller is described as a reach man who thinks it's a good friend of Little Hans. Mr. Miller takes advantage of Little Hans and his good intentions because he is always asking him for favours and he doesn't give anything in return, he doesn't even pay for the fruit that he gets from his farm. One day one of Hughes's son gets injured and Little Hans is asked to go for the doctor and he goes to look for him even though it started to rain. Little Hans was able to get the doctor unfortunately he had an accident and fell down to a pool and drown there. I personally think this book shows the reality of a lot of people. I think it's okay to be generous and do stuff for others but we need to be careful about the people that we have in our lives because not everybody acts as a good friend.

I liked this story because Hans always treated Miller as a best friend, he always visites him with flowers, fruits and herbs from his Garden but on the other side Miller never came down to visit Hans even he was starting to death. All he did just talking abaut good friends hip but never did any thing for the sake of their relationship.

Norma Elizabeth Gutiérrez Romero

The book is talking about a reflection of how the real friendship should be. The story starts with 2 characters, one is the Water-rat and a Duck, they start talking about the frienship and I understood that the Water-rat thinks that he just expect everything from a friend but he doesn´t give anything back, the duck was mad about his concept of friendship and she just leave. Then, a little bird appears on the story and starts to talk to him, I guess that this little bird wanted to try to make him understand about the real concept of friendship, so he began to tell him a story. At the end, it did not work because the Water-rat was uncomfortable with the end of the story.

I have picked “The Devoted Friend” for this task. I picked up this tale

because of the story flow and the moral the author tried to indicate.

This story tells us about the one-sided friendship between Hans and

Miller where devoted one was Hans on the other side Miller was just an

opportunist.

I liked this story because it showed the outcome of a one sided

friendship. There Hans always treated Miller as a best friend. He always

visited him with flowers, fruits and herbs from his garden but on the

other side Miller never came down to visit Hans even he was starving to

death. All he did just talking about good friendship but he never did

anything for the sake of their relationship. Once Miller wanted to give

his old wheelbarrow to Hans. Hans was very happy about that but in

exchange Miller made him runs his errands by him(Hans). But at the

end, in the sense of repaying him(Miller) for a thing which he(Hans)

never had he given his life. So in the name of so-called friendship Hans

lost his precious life but a selfish person like Miller had no regret about

that.

As a moral of the story I think the author showed us the dangerous side

of a one-sided so called friendship. We should not lose our self for the

sake of the other people. When there is no consideration between two

people one person is dominating that cannot be a relation. A good

friendship builds when friends help each other in the crisis and share

their feelings. If its not then we should get out of that kind of friendship

before we lose something precious from our selve.

The story, "The Devoted Friend", is a fairy tale to learn. It shows how a person can be manipulated. The two main characters in "The Devoted Friend" are a poor man known as little Hans and a rich Miller. The Miller claims to be a devoted friend of little Hans. In truth, he selfishly takes advantage of little Hans at every opportunity. Little Hans always does everything that the Miller asks him to do because he does not want to lose the Miller's friendship or offend him. Little Hans' desire to remain the Miller's friend ultimately proves fatal for him.

It also shows how far some people will go for a friend. In this case, Hans gave up tending his garden to help a "true" friend, and died doing so. It is interesting how The Water Rat declares that he knows "nothing in the world that is nobler or rarer than devoted friendship." When asked what this type of friendship is all about, the Water Rat explains that it is about his friends devoting themselves wholeheartedly to him.The two main characters in "The Devoted Friend" are a poor man known as little Hans and a rich Miller.

The Devoted Friend by Oscar Wilde is a short story in which he criticizes friendships driven by greed rather than love.
We find the story of a humble man, whose friendship is sincere, as well as servile, towards a rich man who does not hesitate to take advantage of it while proclaiming himself through mere words as the faithful friend.
This short story calls for a lot of reflection and evaluation that many people should do when it comes to doing favors. An unscrupulous miller, manipulator and profiteer with a farmer so honest that borders on stupidity, are the main actors in this story told by animals. Wilde reflects many facets of people here, ranging from sincere friendship through manipulation, greed ending in human misery.
In the book we have the theme of selfishness, innocence, trust, friendship and self-importance. Narrated in the third person by an unnamed narrator the reader realises after reading the story that Wilde may be exploring the theme of innocence.
