Basics of the Athenian Direct Democracy

-citizens voted directly on legislation and executive bills
- all male citizens had equal political rights, freedom of speech, and the opportunity to participate directly in the political arena
-In the 4th and 5th centuries BCE the male citizen population of Athens ranged from 30,000 to 60,000 depending on the period. The assembly met at least once a month. Any citizen could speak to the assembly and vote on decisions by simply holding up their hands. The majority won the day and the decision was final. Nine presidents elected by lot and holding the office one time only, organised the proceedings and assessed the voting.
-The assembly could also vote to ostracise from Athens any citizen who had become too powerful and dangerous
-There was a smaller group called, boulē, which made decisions as well
-People like-woman, children and slaves could not vote or have a accepted opinion

Which system is better, the Roman Republic or Athenian Democracy? Do you think the republic model still works for the United States? Why or why not? Would an Athenian Direct Democracy model work in the United States? Why or why not?

- We think that the Roman Republic was a better system. We think this because the Roman Republic system was much more organized than the Athenian Democracy. It lasted longer, and it brought the Roman's farther than the Athenian's because they had someone to look up to.
- The Republic Model couldn't work now. The Roman Republic was wrought with corruption and instability, so this is one of the reasons why it didn't work back then, and it probably wouldn't work today. It wouldn't last here in the US.
- The Athenian Democracy couldn't work now either. This is because it was a very public type of Democracy. Any citizen could speak to the assemble and vote by their hands. Also, women and salves didn't have rights, and we don't have slaves now a days and women have rights and can vote. So the Athenian Democracy wouldn't work now.
