The people of Bohemia were furious and threw Ferdinand and his counsel out of the window. Ferdinand manages to survive the 70 foot fall. He escapes to Germany Ferdinand was in need of assistance so he reached out to Philip the Fourth of Spain for help. Fredrick the fifth became the new ruler of Bohemia. He then became conquering Germany until he ran into Ferdinand's army and lost at the Battle of White Mountain. He was a Lutheran and a commander of the army. He then goes on to win the battle of brighten field. He is sometimes referred to as the father of modern warfare because of his use of mobile artillery. For example, he used a cannon with wheels. France, even though they were catholic, funded Sweden during this Phase. The reason why a catholic country was helping Sweden is because of politics. This is one example of how the war became less religious over time. France also supported Sweden because they were surrounded by the Austrians and Spanish. They wanted to have more of an edge over Austria and Spain. After some of the war Gustavus dies in 1632 and Sweden decides to take more of a backseat role. The Swedish were coming off of a major defeat to the Holy Roman Empire at Magdeburg. It was the first major Protestant win. They met at Breitenfeld on September 17. The battle started: 39000(Swedish), 35000(HRE). In the middle of the war the Swedish move their artillery (this was one of the first times someone has done that). They surprise the HRE and won the battle. Losses: Catholic: 7,000 dead and 6,000 surrendered on the field out of 35,000.
