I reached out to a student's Form Teacher, with concerns of him skipping art in the first lesson.. After hearing from the FT, she shared his concerns of Art, as he is weak in art and unable to draw well. When I met the same student in the next lesson, I was extra mindful of my words towards him and he eventually showed his drawing to me. I was delighted at his effort in trying and encouraged him to keep trying (while emphasising that Art does not demand "perfect drawings" right from the start).

Students are more attentive and engaged and tries to do the work (even when they don't know). Super duper heartwarming to see them do well in quizzes, be it getting full marks or showing improvement.

Also when they come to me looking for consult, this shows that they care about their learning

Last lesson of the day/before break, if students able to finish a worksheet with full solution, they are allowed to leave early.

Students are focused on the worksheet, little to no disruption.

I was given a feedback that i should try to connect with my class more. So i've been trying to relate and connect with my classes.

One day, I made my class play Human Kahoot (as they didnt have their PLDs yet). It was really fun and i really enjoyed bouncing off their energy and being casual with the banter as well. I could also see how much the class enjoyed it as they also cheered for the top 3 groups. This made me feel excited to try new activities that would raise the energy of the class and just connect.

It encourages me when I see my initially disengaged/demotivated students, appear more interested and more attentive in subsequent lessons as the term advances. It signals to me that maybe I have been able to make the subject and learning more worthwhile for them.

I think the most rewarding thing is when the students actually appreciate you. I feel like this with one of my English classes and some of my students in NFS.

When I was absent for a day, a student told me she missed me which was very sweet.

There was a student who said “My favourite NFS teacher” which gave me motivation as it meant I was doing something right somewhere.

It is not easy to be a loved teacher, but it keeps me moving because my goal is for the students to enjoy my lessons and to appreciate me.

I was explaining the compression to the 3 integrity students before the lesson end one day .The other teacher pass by , so I thought he is the teacher for next lesson. Surprisedly. He just came in and complimented to the students: I actually can’t believe this is the 3 Integry class . Very impressed! Our whole class were really happy about it. ( later I find out from other teacher that this class actually is the hardest class in Sec 3 level)

The student started out to be quite disruptive in class, constantly shouting and making unhelpful remarks. I talked to him and told him that although his intentions were good but the way he is doing isn’t helpful. I also gave some encouraged him that his artworks are expressive and good. Since then he mellowed down and started to put in alot of effort in his artworks and even tried to improve his artworks so many times that his sketchbooks are practically full.

A student was unsure about the solution of a question and asked me. After successfully explaining it to him, he thanked me and said that that was the first time in his life a math teacher explained something so clearly. I still think about that compliment til this day hehe.

Student in BGR , Constantly troubled and dis-engaged in class after 2 weeks Student cut herself due to BGR going on a break .

With a very bloody uniform student came to find me for help .

Helped her out with the assistance of the school,. She has been well ever since and even managed to pass her english for the first time since sec 1. She has been updating me about her progress ,and is willing to make a difference in her future.

In my form class, there is a retain student who usually doesn't pay attention during lessons and often sleeps with his head on the desk. During CCE lessons, I would constantly try to wake him up, ask him to wash his face to stay awake, and have conversations with him to encourage him to be more attentive in class. After several weeks of communication and effort, he gradually started participating in group discussions. Eventually, he brought the report book that I had been reminding him to bring since the first week.

At first, the students in class are very passive in learning. They were silent, didn't say anything or answer any questions from me even it's not related to the subject. After trying different ways to engage them, they are finally to become more active and more willing to share their own things and opinions during the classes before the term ends. And they are trying to speak a bit more Chinese during the class as compared to the first few weeks.
