Grade 3 believes fluency means automaticity for basic math facts and procedures. Students need to quickly understand a problem, choose an appropriate operation and strategy to solve problems efficiently. Fluency frees the student's thinking to focus on higher level concepts & practices.
It is important to be fluent. Just as reading fluency impacts comprehension, math fluency impacts computational accuracy and the student's readiness for higher order thinking.

Grade 4 believes that fluency is knowing a product, difference, sum, or quotient automatically, with speed and accuracy. Understanding numbers and how they work in the base ten system is another key component of fluency.

We believe it is important because fluency is necessary in order to be efficient in math processes and procedures. In addition, fluency is needed to be successful in real-life situations.

an ability, a skill, a capacity for understanding that provides a foundation for higher order, real world problem solving. Students who are fluent are confident and able to focus successfully on higher level concepts, practices, and procedures. When students are fluent they are accurate, efficient, and flexible in their computation of facts and they are able to choose appropriate strategies. Sometimes they just know at the automatic level. Underlying fluency is deep conceptual understanding and knowledge of the connections within and between the math operations, and an understanding of how numbers work.
