What Tycho and The Durutti Column have in common are both being mainly instrumental artists. Also both artists have quite an ambient way of producing songs. They both involve quite etheral soundscapes.

Which elements do you take influence from subconsciously or consciously in your own music?

I think Consciously i take the fact that i like to make more ambient sounding music from these atrists. I think subconsciously i might take some of the guitar and bass playing ideas from these artists.

How do/will you differentiate your sound from your influences to find your own unique voice and usp?

I tend to use more jazz chords which these artists dont. Aswell as that i also put more emphasis on to the lo-fi aspect of my songs.

I learnt that i need to be more positive about my own music.

What have you learnt about your work in progress so far for this module? Which elements are strong so far? Which areas need more work? How will you go about improving these?

I think the base for both songs is down and I think its just adding details that matter. 

What influences are you beginning to hear? How are these taking shape/becoming apparent in your work? This will inform your Programme Notes on each track as part of your S1 assignment submission

I think the lo-fi aspect is definately becoming more aparent on my first track then i think the drum prodcution ive taken from tycho has become clear on the second.

Their production is very much what sets tycho apart. His mixes are so clean and clear. Another thing that sets Tycho apart is the fact his music is mainly instrumental unlike most other artists in this genre.

What are they doing differently/better than other competitors?

I think what Tycho is doing differently is having a photography alias 'ISO50' Which helps the visual side of his project.

Is their USP centred around performance, technique, production, songwriting, visual, other? There may be multiple aspects to their USP....

I think as I said before he has his own visual style aswell as the music that both work togther to create his style. Also i think the warm sound of analogue synths is a tycho usp.

How do they use this to engage and connect with their audience?

I think because the visual and audio side are so strong people find it easy to identify themselves with the tycho product.

Well most artists in the post punk genre involve vocals but The Durutti Column do not.

What are they doing differently/better than other competitors?

They involve alot of more ambient sounds than other artists from this era/genre.

Is their USP centred around performance, technique, production, songwriting, visual, other? There may be multiple aspects to their USP....

You could say the usp of this band would be the guitar playing. Vini Reilly has a very unique style of playing and is easily recognisable as him.

How do they use this to engage and connect with their audience?

Other guitarist will take inspiration from this guitar work.

I think because i am focusing on using more jazz harmony and most artists like me dont typcially use that kind of harmony.

I think what im doing differently is developing my own style rather than trying emulate another artists.

I think my usp is mainly having ambient sounds, using jazz harmony, lo-fi production style, and i know how i want everything to look visually also using alot of inspiration from water and the ocean.

People that like this type of music will resonate with it.

Tycho has a very distinctive aesthetic using analogue synths and an ambient like choice of sounds. Aswell as this using lo-fi sounding sounds and having compressed sounding drums with short reverbs. Not only that but Tycho incorparates fields recordings and nature sounds into his songs. His artwork for the music also has a distinctive aesthetic using pictures of sunsets and graphic versions of that. visually it seems to follow the same theme.

The Durutti Column

The Durutti Column also have a distinctive aesthetic using guitars soaked in reverb and chorus. Not only that they also have a very unique style of guitar in the songs. Also visually the photos they use for the album covers are grainy and suit the vibe of the music.
