I often have the students explain their thinking to each other so they can learn from one another. It also helps them to see that there are many ways to solve the same problem.

They were collaborating with one another and demonstrating their learning. Sharing their learning is an important component. I saw a great connection to the learner profile.

Me and Jo Boaler must share some part of our brain because I always tell my students that the ones who didn't get it right the first time learned more than the students that got it right away. We all learn better from mistakes and one thing I love about teaching with IB is that mistakes are okay and even encouraged. In discussions I even learn things from my students or they think of questions I haven't even thought about. It's a fun way to teach.

I also agree that the growth mindset is very important. A few years ago I was a STEM specialist (enrichment) and the students that had the hardest time with the challenges were the "high achieving" students who had the hardest time overcoming challenges and "failure" when working on an open-ended activity. We worked on some growth mindset activities to remind them that mistakes are the best way to learn.

Also, visual and manipulatives are important to the learning process. My math curriculum has many manipulatives and we regularly use them in our math lessons. I decided that this year I am going to devote some time at the beginning of the year to let the students "play" with the manipulatives similar to what I did when I taught Kindergarten. This is important so they are ready to use the tools when they are introduced in lessons. They will be familiar and hopefully students will be better able to incorporate them in a way which helps them learn.
