Hidden Korean Culture in

K-POP Demon Hunters

By: Jeong Ji-yeon

Date: September 10, 2025

🎨 Characters and Symbols

Have you ever heard of an animation where idols fight demons? That’s K-POP Demon Hunters. But this show is not just about music and action—it is full of Korean culture!

The blue tiger Derpy and the magpie are not just cute animals. They are characters inspired by a traditional Korean painting called Ho-jak-do. In Korea, the tiger is a symbol of strength and protection, and the magpie brings good luck. These traditional symbols become fun and friendly characters for global fans.

🔮 Tradition and Performance

The girl group Huntr/x is also special. They are descendants of shamans, and their performance with music and dance is based on Korean shamanism. This tradition is mixed with K-POP to create a new fantasy style.

Even the weapons, like the Sain-geom and crescent swords, come from Korean history and rituals. The villains, Saja Boys, wear traditional clothes like hanbok and gat, showing Korea’s culture in a modern way.

🍜 Everyday Life and Music

Everyday Korean life also appears in the anime, like eating cup ramen or visiting convenience stores. These small details help foreign fans understand what life is like in Korea. The soundtrack combines K-POP beats with traditional sounds like drums from shaman rituals, creating a unique music style.

🌏 Global Meaning

In conclusion, K-POP Demon Hunters is not just entertainment. It shows that Korean culture can be modern, fun, and global. The show helps people around the world learn about Korea, and it even gives us a chance to appreciate our own culture in new ways.

Daesan High School Leads Educational Innovation with Autonomous Public High School 2.0 Model

Personalized learning programs boost college readiness and career exploration

By Reporter Yang Jin-young
Published: September 10, 2025

SEOSAN - Daesan High School is pioneering a revolutionary approach to education through its implementation of the Autonomous Public High School 2.0 model, providing students with unprecedented opportunities for personalized learning and career development.

The innovative program, which emphasizes customized education and community partnerships, has already shown promising results in helping students build stronger college applications while discovering their future career paths.

"It's a system designed to provide every student with opportunities that match their interests and talents," said Principal Park Si-yoon during a recent interview. "Our goal isn't just college preparation—it's about helping students develop the skills they need for life."

Programs Show Real Results

Current senior Park Seo-ho, who is pursuing a career in Korean language education, credits the school's Career Exploration Week with transforming his college preparation strategy. His academic journey includes writing a career integration report titled "Research on Promoting Self-Regulated Learning for Underachieving Students: Focusing on Reinterpreting Failure Experiences," and presenting at the academic festival on "The Emergence of Postmodern Literature and Its Comparison with Modernist Literature."

"I participated in humanities and social science camps, English camps, and education-related camps. These experiences directly connect to my goal of becoming an educator and have given me practical insights into teaching methods," Park said.

The school offers a comprehensive range of programs including Career Exploration Week, Curriculum Fair, career counseling, mentoring, and project-based learning classes. Students can also participate in themed camps covering humanities, science, and arts.

Community Partnerships Drive Success

The program's success stems largely from strategic partnerships with key organizations including the Chungnam Office of Education, Seosan Education Office, Hanseo University, Shinsung University, and LG Chem. These collaborations provide students with real-world experiences and direct connections to higher education and industry professionals.

Growing Interest from Incoming Students

The program is attracting attention from prospective students. Middle school student Lee Ji-yoon from Seosan Girls' Middle School hopes to attend despite the distance concerns.

"I've heard about all the camps and mentoring programs. It sounds like I'll actually get to explore different subjects and careers before deciding what to focus on for college," she said.

When asked about the distance, Lee Ji-yoon noted, "Yes, that was something I was worried about initially. But I heard the school is considering providing bus transportation to make it easier for students from different areas to attend. Plus, if they can offer programs and camps that match my specific interests and career goals, I think it's worth the commute."

INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS

Principal Park Si-yoon: "We see success in our students' confidence levels, their engagement in learning, and the quality of their college applications. When students can demonstrate real self-directed learning experiences, that's when we know it's working."

Student Park Seo-ho: "Career Exploration Week helped me realize that I want to become a Korean language teacher. My research on helping students overcome academic struggles by reframing their failures as learning opportunities became really important when I was preparing my college applications."

Future Student Lee Ji-yoon: "The specialized programs and camps will help me find the career path that's right for me, even if it means commuting from Seosan."

KEY VOCABULARY

1. Autonomous (자율적인) - Having the freedom to act independently
2. Pioneering (선구적인) - Being among the first to develop new methods
3.

Is English Really the Language of the Future?

           By 1118 dayun lee

Today, language feels more important than ever. People around the world work together, share culture and knowledge, and communicate across borders every single day. In this global society, one language appears more often than any other: English. From news articles and international meetings to classrooms and online platforms, English has become a major tool of connection. But the question remains: Will English continue to be the language of the future? Or will new changes challenge its position?

Why English Still Matters

First of all, English is the most widely used international language today. It is one of the official languages of the United Nations, the European Union, and many other global organizations. It is also the standard language in fields such as aviation, shipping, and science. Most academic research papers are written in English, and leading universities around the world use English as their main teaching language.

On the internet, English is also dominant. A large portion of online content, from YouTube videos to online courses and databases, is provided in English. In addition, many global companies require strong English skills when hiring new workers. For example, big companies like Google, Amazon, or Samsung see English not just as a skill, but as a requirement for success in global markets.

Because of this, English is more than just a way to communicate. It has become the language of knowledge and opportunity. Knowing English means having access to more information, more networks, and more choices for the future. This is why many people argue that English will remain the most important language in the years ahead.

Why English Might Not Be Enough

However, not everyone agrees. Some believe that in the future, English will lose its absolute power and share its role with other languages.

One important example is Mandarin Chinese. As China’s economic influence grows, Mandarin has become more important in trade, business, and diplomacy. Many countries are increasing Chinese language programs in schools, and companies are looking for workers who can speak it.

Spanish is another strong language. With hundreds of millions of native speakers across Latin America, Spain, and even the United States, Spanish already connects people across multiple continents. In fact, in the U.S., Spanish is becoming nearly as common as English in many communities.

Another big factor is artificial intelligence (AI) translation. Tools like Google Translate, Papago, and AI-based apps are improving quickly. Real-time translation earbuds and software already exist. In the near future, people might not need to master one “world language.” Instead, they could speak in their own mother tongue while technology instantly translates. If that happens, the need for English as the single global language could become less strong.

A Balanced View

History teaches us that no language dominates forever. In the past, Latin was the main language of Europe. For centuries, French was the language of diplomacy and culture. Today, English has the leading role. But history also shows that power changes, and language changes with it.

This means English may not always keep its unique position. New global powers, cultural changes, or advanced technologies could create a future where many languages share influence. The world might not have one “winner,” but several important languages working side by side.

My Opinion

I believe that English will remain an important language for a long time. However, I do not think it has to be the only language of the future. English is still the most widely used and powerful language in the international world, but we cannot ignore the growth of other languages like Chinese and Spanish, as well as the progress of AI translation technology.

This means the future we should prepare for is not “English alone is enough,” but a time when English will be the foundation, while other languages and technologies are also important. For students, this is very meaningful. We should keep studying English, but also develop respect for other languages and cultures. That is how we can stay competitive in a world that changes quickly.

In the end, what matters most is not just one single language, but the ability to connect with others through language. The real key to the future may not be English itself, but the power of communication that brings people together.

단어

1. dominant –

2. requirement –

3. opportunity – 기회

4. diplomacy – 외교

5. artificial intelligence (AI) –

6. absolute –

7. foundation –

8. competitive –

Should Social Media Be Regulated Globally?

Social media is now a part of almost everyone’s daily life. Apps like Instagram, TikTok, X (Twitter), and Facebook connect people across the world in just a second. But this power also brings serious problems. So, an important question comes up: Should social media be controlled by global rules?

Arguments for Global Regulation

Many people think social media should have stronger rules. One reason is the problem of false information. For example, during COVID-19, untrue health information spread quickly online and confused many people. Fake news and political rumors can also cause problems in elections or between countries.

Another reason is hate speech. Social media algorithms often push extreme or hateful posts because they get attention. This can divide communities and even cause violence in real life. For these reasons, supporters believe global regulation would help protect people and prevent bigger conflicts.

Arguments Against Global Regulation

Others believe global regulation is not a good idea. First, it may hurt freedom of speech. Social media gives ordinary people and minority groups a chance to share their voices. If strict rules are made, some people could be silenced. In the wrong hands, regulation could even be used as censorship.

Second, it is not realistic. Every country has different laws, cultures, and values. Something seen as hate speech in one country may be normal expression in another. Also, it would be very hard to make all countries agree on one set of rules. Large tech companies might also fight against global rules, saying they already monitor harmful content.

A Balanced View

It is clear that social media has both good and bad sides. If there are no rules, it can spread lies, hate, and harm democracy. But if rules are too strict, free expression could disappear.

A possible answer may be in the middle. Countries can make their own laws but also work together on big issues like misinformation, online bullying, and election interference. Instead of one global law, countries could share ideas and make platforms more responsible.

My Opinion

I think both sides have good points. Complete freedom can cause problems, and complete regulation can also be dangerous. Social media should be a place where many voices can be freely expressed, but at the same time, there must be ways to prevent harm.

That is why I believe the best solution is to keep freedom while also blocking harmful content. If we do this, social media will not be a dangerous space, but a place where people can stay connected and learn from one another.

단어

2. False information –

4. Hate speech –

8. Minority groups –

동화- Ollie, the Otter with Small Eyes (작은 눈의 수달, 올리)

Written by 1118 이다윤

In a forest, there lived an otter named Ollie, who was always cheerful and full of laughter. Ollie loved talking with his forest friends and enjoyed presenting at the school run by Kiki, the capybara teacher.

One day, something happened at school. While Ollie had stepped out with his friends, the spot where he usually sat got messy. Fuzz, a fox who never liked Ollie, shouted, "This is Ollie’s usual spot! It must have been him!" Some friends believed Fuzz and began to doubt Ollie. No matter how much Ollie insisted he hadn’t done it, no one believed him except for Sappy, the beaver, and Pip, the duck.

From that day on, Ollie became a quiet otter. His bright, cheerful smile disappeared, and he seemed like a completely different otter. Even as time passed, Ollie didn’t return to his old self. His friends gradually drifted away, and after school, Ollie would often go alone to the birch forest and cry.

One day, Ollie found a small letter and some snacks in front of his house. The next day, and the day after that, letters kept arriving. At first, he hesitated, but curiosity got the better of him, and he read them. The letters contained warm questions like, "How have you been? What’s your day like these days?" For the first time in a long while, Ollie decided to write back.

Through exchanging letters, Ollie made a new friend. He shared stories about school, the birch forest, and his recent worries. For the first time in a long time, he felt he could open his heart.

One day, a letter arrived with a map to the birch forest. Ollie’s heart raced. He ran to the forest as fast as he could, and there were Sappy and Pip waiting. It turned out they had been sending the letters all along.

Sappy spoke gently, "Ollie, we’re sorry we left you alone. We didn’t know how to help you. But now, we want to be with you."

Pip nodded and added, "We’ll stay by your side so you can smile again!"

Ollie was surprised, but soon he gave a warm smile. "It’s okay. I’m fine now. Thank you for being here with me."

From that day on, Ollie went back to school. There were still some kids who didn’t like him, but he chose not to care. Because he realized he had true friends who genuinely cared about him.

단어-

1. cheerful –

2. insisted –

3. hesitated –

4. curiosity – 호기심

5. exchange –

7. genuinely –

I would like to recommend the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness.” This film is not just a story about success, but about persistence, hope, and the power of family love. His story clearly shows that hard work never betrays you. It taught me that true happiness is not only about achieving success, but about the journey of pursuing your dreams.

Title:Beyond Classroom to the World: Principal and Students' Growth Interviews

Communication skills and career skills developed through learning

By reporter: Kim ga eun

Published: September 17 2025

Daesan High School, located in Seosan City, South Chungcheong Province, offers students a variety of learning opportunities using local characteristics and resources under the Autonomous Public High School 2.0 system. Career exploration programs, active club activities, and student-led experiential learning in connection with LG Chem are special educational assets unique to Daesan High School. In particular, through discussion, cultural experience, and career experience activities, students are naturally developing core future competencies such as communication skills, responsibility, and problem-solving skills. It is a school that grows with the local community and students become the main characters.

Interview Highlight: Principal Park Si Yoon

I conducted an interview with principal Park Si-yoon of Daesan High School. I asked the principal which activities he thought would be most impressive if he were a student at Daesan High School. The principal said, "As an autonomous public high school, I think the career convergence reporting camp among various programs will be particularly impressive." And he said, "A good career convergence reporting is that it is a good program to be able to develop the ability to integrate in connection with the desired career path." He said that the career convergence report camp is the representative program of Daesan High School. "The second most impressive thing is the student council activities. For example, it was really cool to see the students sing and dance at the center of the student council to relieve their tension after the exams such as the Sori-gil event. And to see the student council run by themselves, I felt really desirable. The principal said, "I think the student council of Daesan High School is really the best."

Interviews with Students at Daesan High School

I also interviewed the seniors who are attending Daesan High School. I asked them about the strengths of Daesan High School. They answered, "The teacher carefully prepares the vital book by reflecting the strengths and growth of the students." He also replied, "The strength of Daesan High School is its active sports league match. You can relieve stress and develop a sense of cooperation and responsibility by exercising with your friends. Through the league match, there are more exchanges between classes, and the school is much more lively." And they asked me what activities I think are the most memorable and beneficial in Daesan High School. The principal also said that the camp was the most memorable. The reason is that I think it is the most beneficial because I think the vital book is an opportunity to be filled well and colorful, and to dig deeper in the field I like." In the future, Daesan High School will develop into a school where students can take the lead and develop their dreams.

    Key vocabulary

1. Autonomous — 자율적

2. Convergence —

3. Competencies —

4. Responsibility — 책임감

5. Beneficial —

“Controversy over the Death Penalty: Should the death penalty be maintained or abolished?”

“Death Penalty Debate: Should it be kept or abolished?”

By reporter kang yoon seo

Published: November 15, 2025

Recently, a series of brutal crimes has reignited heated debate over the abolition of the death penalty. Abolitionists argue that “the state has no right to take a person’s life,” while proponents insist that “strong punishment is necessary to ensure public safety.” As a result, the issue of capital punishment continues to spark intense confrontation between the moral value of respecting human life and the practical need to protect society from violent crime.

Interviews with Teacher at Daesan High School

According to a social studies teacher working at Daesan High School,

“There should be a death penalty in society. I believe that someone who takes another person’s life should be held accountable with their own life, just as the saying goes, ‘an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.’ That is true justice,” he said. He added, “The death penalty itself serves as a strong warning to heinous criminals and acts as an example.” He also emphasized, “Since South Korea has a three-tiered court system, the possibility of a wrongful execution is minimal.”

Interviews with Students at Daesan High School

Students at Daesan High School, both first- and third-year, expressed the same opinion, stating that the death penalty is essential.

“If heinous criminals are not executed, there is a risk that they could eventually return to society and commit the same crimes. It is better to prevent such risks in advance,” they said, adding, “It can also provide psychological reassurance to the victims without variables such as prison breaks or parole.”

Many people support the death penalty based on the argument that heinous criminals should be isolated from society. From a societal perspective, there is also a growing argument that “the massive taxes spent on keeping heinous criminals in prison are wasted; those funds could be more meaningfully used to help the socially vulnerable or those in need, which would benefit society as a whole.”

Interview with the Principal of Daesan High School: Park Si Yoon

However, there are also those who oppose this view.

Park Si-yoon, principal of Daesan High School, stated, “No matter how serious the crime or how unforgivable it may seem in society, carrying out the death penalty deprives a person of any chance for rehabilitation.” She continued, “I believe that even if someone was born into a difficult environment or had unfavorable conditions growing up, they can change over time and may come to repent and transform through certain experiences.” Drawing from her own experience, she added, “I believe that every person has the potential for rehabilitation. Therefore, the death penalty is not only about taking a life but also eliminates the possibility that a person could change in the future, making it a cruel system.”

I oppose the death penalty among these opinions. I believe that life imprisonment is more effective than the death penalty in terms of crime prevention and rehabilitation. As philosophers and the legal scholar Beccaria argued, I think long-term and continuous punishment provides offenders with greater lessons than short-term or immediate pain.

Furthermore, since there is no clear evidence that the death penalty significantly reduces crime rates, I believe there may be more effective alternatives than the death penalty. I also think the death penalty relies merely on instilling fear. Humans should be given a chance to change, and punishments should aim for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

Key vocabulary

Death penalty (사형제), Abolish (폐지하다), Reignite (재점화하다)

Heinous crime (흉악범), Parole (가석방)

Hold accountable (~에게 책임을 물다), Rehabilitation (교화)

: In interviews with students and teachers at Daesan High School regarding the abolition of the death penalty, there were opinions both in favor and against it.
