The 1960’s were a time of great social upheaval. The children of the post war baby boom were coming of age and struggling to find their voice in the world. Fueled by the upcoming generation, several social movements were shaping the culture of the decade. The anti-war movement was in fierce opposition of America’s involvement in the Vietnam conflict and the employment of the selective service system. The Civil Rights movement was also making great strides in the 1960’s backed by the leadership of Martin Luther King Junior. Another movement of great consequence was Second Wave Feminism. Second Wave Feminism aimed to further equality for women by drawing attention to issues with sexuality, family, and domestic violence among many other matters. The cultural movements nurtured a feeling of disillusionment and distrust for the government and “Authority”. These feelings are deeply interwoven into Plath’s “Daddy”. The culture of 1960’s in one word? Counter-culture.

This poem is popularly understood to be written by Plath to her long deceased father. Otto Plath passed away when Sylvia was only eight years old. THis loss of her father during her formative years played a large part in shapping Syllvia. Through the use of imagery in the poem you can get a sense of the anger she felt towards her father. She prtrayes him as a Nazi and a vampire. Throughout the poem she also uses repetition to draw the reader in and stress her feelings. The poem ends with calling her daddy a bastard and stating she is through. THis is symbolic of letting the pain of her father go so she can try to move on with her life.
