Holy Week or Passion is the week before Easter, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday when preparations for Easter come to a climax, especially from Holy Thursday. It is called "Great", not because it has more days or hours than other weeks, but because the events that happen in churches are of great importance for people.

Holy Friday-'Epitaphios'-bier of Christ

It is the holiest day of the week,a day of mourning for the death of Christ. Church bells ring all day and night and we do not do any work. The housewives do not deal with housework. They even avoid cooking.
The Epitaph is decorated in church with flowers women have brought and in the evening there is the procession of the Epitaph in the streets.People follow chanting and holding candles.

Time for a family get together

As the years go by, we are all so busy and our free time is getting less and less. Here in Greece we have some special occasions that give us the chance to devote our time to our family, such as Christmas and Easter.
At Easter all the holy week, we have some customs. In the evenings we go to church. On Holy Thursday we paint red eggs and bake cakes. On Holy Friday we go to the epitaph all together. Moreover, we go to our godmother to give us presents and candles for the Saturday night. Also on Sunday before noon all the family gets together and have a long lunch with lots of meat, salads and drinks. This is so special! It’s great to show our love to others and focus on the true meaning of life.❤️

HOLY SATURDAY-THE ETERNAL FLAME

The Eternal Flame is described by Orthodox Christians as a miracle that occurs every year at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem on Holy Saturday, the day preceding Orthodox Easter. It is brought to Greece and given to priests who carry it to their churches. On the night of Holy Saturday it is taken from the hands of the priests and is passed from person to person during the ceremony of Resurrection. This Holy Fire symbolises the Resurrection of Christ.

Easter Sunday
On Easter Sunday all the families gather outdoors for lunch and celebrate 'Pascha' (Easter). A traditional custom is roasting a whole lamb on the spit. The preparations start the day bofore. You need to put the lamb on the spit and make sure that it is stable. You also put spices to give it more taste. You need to collect wood and dig a pit where the lamb will be roasted. This tradition comes from ancient years. 'Labatha' -candle

Every year all the godparents give to their godchildren gifts and a candle called "labatha" for the Holy Saturday. This night every faithful takes this candle to church. After the Liturgy we carry them back home and we try to keep the flame burning in a "kandili" for as long as we can ,as it is a blessing for our house.

Easter eggs are part of the Paschal customs, either dyed, red or chocolate eggs.When we get back home after the Saturday midnight Easter service, we have dinner, starting with cracking each other's eggs.Everyone chooses a red egg which seems to be the strongest, finds an opponent and, holding his egg, taps the end of the egg against the end of the other person's egg saying ''Christos Anesti'', trying to crack it. The other one responds ''Alithos Anesti'' and the winner competes with someone else until the person with the strongest egg wins and is said to have good luck for all the year. 'Mayiritsa' is a soup we make here in Greece on the morning of Holy Saturday. It is made with the organs and intestines of the lamb so that nothing is wasted. We also put in some green vegetables to make it tastier. 'Christos Anesti' - Christ is Risen
Holy Saturday Midnight

Just before Holy Saturday midnight, we go to church, where all the lights are switched off as a symbol of Christ's death. We light our 'lambathas' with the Eternal Flame we get from the hands of the priest and this is passed from person to person. At midnight we go outside the church where the priest calls out "Christos Anesti". The bells start ringing continuously, we kiss each other and say "Christos Anesti", to which the reply is "Alithos Anesti" ("Indeed He has Risen").
