         <description><![CDATA[<p>I think the reasons Phineas Gage's case is so frequently discussed and why it is actually important are different. I actually first heard about Phineas Gage in my freshman year Physics course when my teacher went on a brief side story about it. At the time, I was not particularly interested in psychology, but the case still stood out to me, as it does to many others.  I think that, compared to other interesting psychological cases, it is tangible and disturbing to anyone, not only to those who understand psychology, as many other breakthrough cases are. That being said, I certainly think the case stands on its own despite the initial shock factor. That Gage's symptoms were similar to those of degenerative illnesses like dementia provides crucial evidence that many personality/mental changes are also physical changes.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I believe that Phineas Gage’s case is so important because it helped us establish the role of the frontal lobe, and how it connects to changes in personality and rational decision making. Various neurologists have tried to analyse the damage that occurred and theorise how Gage was able to survive and function despite such a devastating injury. While understanding of the frontal lobe was in its infancy at the time, Gage’s case helped construct the expansive knowledge we have now about the role of the frontal cortex. It provides us insights into what part of the brain manages emotional regulation, and likely guides further operations and studies.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I believe the popularity of the Phineas Gage in psychology education comes down to its historical significance and the striking visuals of his brain injury. The  case occurred during a time when brain injuries are generally considered unsurvivable, his recovery then provided ground-breaking evidence that challenged existing believes and offered insights into how the brain works. Additionally, the way Phneas Gage got the injury, having a iron rod passing completely through the skull, is so extreme that even today it's hard to believe the chance of survival. Combined with the eye-catching images that replicates the injury, the case is highly effective in psychology courses for capturing the student's attention while illustrating its historical significance. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Phineas Gage case most likely gained popularity in Psychology courses due to its monumental shift in the understanding of the brain and the connection between the brain's structure and behaviour. The fact that Phineas Gage was able to survive a seemingly fatal injury drew the attention of psychologists and neurologists alike. People were fascinated by how this phenomenon had occurred and what the lasting effects of this injury could be. Moreover, it had been reported that Phineas Gage had changes to his personality, further fueling the interest in what injuries to the brain caused personality changes. People speculate that Phineas Gage’s injuries to his frontal lobes had disrupted his impulse controls, emotional regulation and moral judgement. And although people now recognize that the early reports of his personality shift had been exaggerated, it is still a useful case to refer to and compare to current studies. Overall, the Phineas Gage case is a great way to connect psychology and neuroscience as it relates the anatomy of the brain to the psychological elements.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I believe the case of Phineas Gage is so frequently discussed among psychologists because it provided evidence about the role of the frontal lobe in human personality, behavior, and social functioning. The injuries he suffered were fatal, so the fact that he survived caught the attention of numerous scientists and psychologists.&nbsp;</p><p>Many scientists and psychologists believed that all the parts of the brain function as a whole, not as separate parts. Gage’s case was very unique and important in getting to know how different parts of our brain function.&nbsp;</p><p>As he suffered injuries on his left frontal lobe, despite surviving it and functioning normally, his friends and family later reported severe changes in his personality and behavior, calling him “no longer Gage”. They said that he became more aggressive, impatient and not able to behave in social situations. This allowed doctors to learn about the role of the frontal lobes in human behavior and personality. In conclusion, the case of Phineas Gage is not only unique and pivotal, but serves as a bridge between the understanding of brain function and anatomy, and the neurological and behavioral elements.&nbsp;</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I think Phineas Gage is so frequently discussed in psychology courses firstly because his story is both true and shocking, which attracts people's attention. But in modern times psychologists can now focus on the methods that previous psychologists and neuroscientists used, to find out why he recovered from a fatal brain injury, that were incorrect and try to better understand how people thought the brain worked before getting more useful technology or resources. It's important to talk about Phineas Gage not just because he paved the way for phrenologists to gain more clarity on specialization of certain parts of the brain, but because he is a prime example for what can happen when a story is led astray. As the video mentioned, everyone deserves to have their story properly told, but because Gage's recovery was something people never would have believed, that gave them headway to overdramatize certain accounts of his character. I hope that psychologists mention Phineas Gage now not just for his survival, but what it looks like to remain honest and respectful when talking about another individual.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I believe Phineas Gages's case is so widely discussed because of how "supernatural" it is. So far, no one has seen this happen before/ again and it really began the studies of neuropsychology and the physical brain. During the era when his incident occured, brain or skull damages were deathly since we did not have the modern technology we do now. I can recall learning about it last year and just being absolutely captivated about how a scenario like Phineas's could happen. As well as the fact that he was still nalive after it (with some brain defects).</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I think Phineas Gage's case is important in psychology because of how it changed our understanding of brain structure and was one of the first cases to provide evidence on what happens if part of the brain is damaged and how that changes one's behavior. We now know that each part of the brain has a different function. For example, the frontal lobe, which was damaged in Gage's brain, impacted his personality, decision-making, and ability to interact with others. This case is still studied in psychology courses as a way to grab a student's attention since Gage was able to survive a brain injury that could've been fatal. It also shows one of the first discoveries relating to the psychology behind the brain structure. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>As someone who had personally never heard of Phineas Gage or his unfortunate accident before this course, I think that the reason his case is so important is due to a couple of reasons. One being the fact that he even managed to survive in the first place, as his horrific accident shocked those around him who were at the scene, as well as the fact that it provides us with historical evidence of the role that the brain plays in a persons personality and the way that they express themselves. However, I think that the reason that it is so talked about in psychology courses is because it shows the connection between biology and what some may consider a social science, psychology. In this course specifically, which branches those two together, I think the Phineas Gage case is a perfect example of evidence of the link between the neuroscience, and psychology, as his case shows how injuries to the brain can cause personality issues, as in his case it caused his impulse control to be disrupted, poorer emotional regulation, and an overall change in the way he presented himself. </p>]]></description>
