During the time period between 1950 - 1954, Senator Joseph McCarthy would spread anti-communist rhetoric to the masses. He would hold trials often falsely accusing rival politicians or sometimes just random people of being communists. During this time 2 men who were convicted of stealing secrets from the Manhattan Project were sentenced to death. This is important because there was an expectation that execution would be too harsh and clemency would be granted. However no one would call for clemency due to the fact they were afraid of being accused of being communists by McCarthy. Below is the radio announcement of their execution:
https://soundcloud.com/the-miller-center-at-uva/radio-report-on-rosenberg-execution

On the 11th of June, 1963, He would walk into an intersection in a large city in South Vietnam and then proceed to light himself on fire in an act of sacrifice and protest. This act was recognized heavily by the Americans who were already losing support for the South Vietnamese. Many other monks would follow suit soon after and meet similar fates.
