Eds outcome is foreshadowed earlier in the film by Pete as he says "if you want to live like an animal go live in the shed" this is referring to Eds preferred lifestyle of only bothering about gaming and not errr hygiene.? (stereotypical) Eds character is a stereotype in itself. He is the friend who is hopeless at keeping a job, uses comedy in EVERY situation and doesn't care much for his life. He represents a binary opposite to Liz who is mature and in control of her life (a clear adult). We see that Shaun is torn between these two in the beginning and by the end of the movie Shaun seems to be invested in Liz's lifestyle HOWEVER Shaun 'pops' to the shed where Ed is showing the audience he hasn't completely let go and that perhaps his childish tendencies are still there. He has found a healthy balance between the two.
????

Differences in the 'before' and 'after' shot of Shaun's living room

The living room at the beginning of the film is dirty and messy. It suggests Shaun and Ed are careless and slobs. There's empty food packets on the coffee table and under the table. Furthermore, the positioning of the table is at an angle, as if they're not bothered about what the appearance of their living room, it's not neat and gives a messier and cluttered feel to the room. Where as at the end, the table is straight, it looks neat and well kept, we can see the effect Liz has had on the house. There's also magazines on the table, most likely Liz's, these suggest how she has taken over house, as if she's in charge, Shaun clearly hasn't made any of these changes. Compared to when Ed lived there, there was food packets all over the table, he had taken over that room, especially because he didn't have a job and probably just sat on the sofa all day. Also, the rug under the table is gone at the end of the film, it's quite hideous. However, Shaun and Ed probably don't care about the appearance of the room and the rug might be there just to cover stains on the carpet, as they have food everywhere and they appear to be quite clumsy and slobs.
Furthermore, the stickers on the TV have gone, the posters have been replaced with a cabinet and a picture of a flower. Here we can see the effect Liz has had when moving in, it adds femininity to the room compared to the boyish, messy room it was before.
Also, the addition of pink pillows and the sofa throw, creates a more feminine and cleaner appearance. The white carpet and white sofa throw suggests how Liz has changed Shaun's cleanliness and lifestyle as it appears to look neater and well kept with no stains.

We can apply some character roles to Shaun of the Dead

Hero: Clearly Shaun as he is our protagnist and we are sided to him however we can ultimately see Evon or even the military as the hero as they're the ones that ultimatley "save the day"
Villian: The zombies this is also supported by the fact they're othered we aren't sided to them.
Donor
Dispatcher
False hero
Helper
Princess
Princesses father

Subscribing to Genre Formalism?

Shaun of the Dead conforms to many Zombie Horror conventions in terms of narrative. For example the cause of the public turning into Zombies is never known. We are given options most memorably when Shaun goes to the corner shop and sees newspapers blaming crops and earlier on a radio blaming a meteor? We never truly know the cause and are left to pick an option. This may have been done to avoid the audience being to invested in the cause and not paying attention to the story. Also this is another way to align us with Shaun as we only know as much as he does and if he's not bothered why should we be?
The Zombies in Shaun of the dead follow more stereotypical or traditional Zombies than the fast ones in 28 days later these ones are similar to Romeros NOTLD or Tv series Walking Dead. This is because the ones in SOTD are slow in terms of speed. They don't rise from the grave (if they do its not shown 0_0 ) , disease/virus passed through a bite and can be killed through "destroying the brain".
Furthermore mistakes are made this is obvious as by the end of the film the only two alive by the end are Shaun and Liz (talk about bad leadership 0_0). Some of these aren't Shaun's fault as noises are made accidentally e.g the pub and keeping in mind some of these mistakes are for comedy purposes. One of these mistakes is Barbara separating from the group as she doesn't fully understand the situation and relying on secure places but not thinking about the exits which they end up needing (surprisingly Ed is the only one in the film who does think about this as he is the one to show Shaun and Liz the entrance to the cellar behind the bar).
