It is not clear but there are hints that Keith had an affair with a colleague or someone he works with. Her mother tells her that marrying him was a mistake and that she did it because she wanted to live a certain way, without minding the consequences, wanted to 'feel dangerously alive'. Lianne had thrown him out and Nina is telling her that she had more to loose this time: self-respect. Even though he knows it is not right to open up the briefcase, he still has the urge to do it. So he does. He finds a couple of things inside it, reminding him of the man whom it belonged to. 
In a bakery, Lianne comes across Isabel, the mother of the siblings. They talk about their kids and their misterious behavior. It could have something to do with a man named Bill Lawton; "The man". 
At home, Lianne confronts Justin with the fact that he has taken the binoculars without asking for permission. She is hoping for an answer but he leaves her in the unknown.

Together the kids have developed the myth of Bill Lawton. But Katie knows better, they suspect. She is too smart not to know the real name. But they assume she would keep it to herself and goes along with Bill Lawton because it is wrong. 
This has been the longest talk Keith and Lianne have had. In the past they shared everything with each other. Every question and every issue. Lianne talks to her mother after Martin has left the apartment. Lianne cannot understand why Nina isn’t more curious about Martin’s true identity. It turns out that he has been active in a communist movement in Germany.
