1. Think about your lyrics. Is the mood fast or slow? Decide which chords you are going to use. We have looked at how the chord of C and F are played at the start of John Lennon's Imagine.

2. Decide how many chords you want to play. You can choose from C, Am F and G (or add more if you want)

3. Decide HOW you are going to play the chords. BLOCK- all 3 notes together. DIVIDED (top two notes of chord then bottom like in Imagine) or BROKEN-splitting the notes up.

4.YOU MUST PLAY IN TIME TO THE BEAT. Make sure that your 'click' is on (blue metronome)

5. Check your SCORE to see your rhythm. Does it all look the same. If it is then you are playing in time.

Please keep practising your chord patterns. Watch all the clips below. John Lennon's Imagine is based on C, Am F and G you need to decided WHAT ORDER you are going to play your chords in.

Listen to Imagine a few times, the DIVIDED chord pattern becomes really catchy.

How are you going to play your chords? Make sure your hand is in the 'chicken foot' position. Block makes the music sound strong, Broken and Divided help the music to flow and sound smooth.

Think about what your lyrics are about. You could perhaps use block chords (all 3 notes of the chord played together) in the chorus and then broken or divided in the verse?

You need to think about adding a solo section. This could be improvised voice or an instrument.

After your chord pattern is completed we will be wroking on IMPROVISING a melody. This is how we start to shape a tune to fit with your words. Give yourself a headstart and make sure that you have memorised your lyrics. it will make the process much easier. Try to look at your words line by line and think about whether you want the melody to be fast and catchy or slow?

Ask your friends/family their opinion. What do they like about your lyrics? Are there any lines that stand out? Which lines are memorable? Are any of your lines catchy?

The name of my song is called 'Hurtful' and the chords i use are 'C, E and G'.

Sounds good Amy. I think you'll need some minor chords in your pattern. I'll go over minor chords next week.

In the chord pattern of C you could use Aminor and Dminor. You could also switch between G major and G minor.

Keep uisng the metronnome and the timing will become easier. Remember to lower the tempo from 120bpm (beats per miniute) to 80. This will make it easier to record your chords in. You can then speed the tempo back up when all your layers are finished.

Timing is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing.

After half term we will be looking at improvising a melody so that you can write a tune for your song.

Improvising is basically making up rhythmic patterns over the top of your chords.

You need to start with a couple of notes and a simple rhythm (spicy chicken!!)

As you get more confident you'll be able to introduce more notes.

You need to listen to the notes and decide what sounds best for your song.

Look at your lyrics and start to consider whether your patterns need to be long or short.

We will also be looking at how to improvise vocal melodies.

Please feel free to upload any vocal, guitar or piano improvising clips that you think would be helpful.

The piece starts with a simple piano obstinato, which is made up of 4 note. The C in the bass part remains the same which gives the listener a reference point and becomes repetitive. The texture is thickened when the C note is played as an octave which gives the music more depth. The ostinato has a simple rhythm, characterized by a quaver rest at the start of each bar. To provide contrast the second sentence introduces a different rhythmic pattern. This is made up of four sets of semi quavers.

The song has four beats and it contains high and low melodies that contrats and give the listener the feeling of sadness. Also, the fact that it has an underlaying 4 beat rhythm means that the listener can recognise the song. The song repeats itself throughout the song and this draws the listener in to t and makes them more captivated.

These first four bars are slow and begin with a rest at the beginning of each bar. This is then repeated for eight bars. In bar nine the pace is faster and this is played in a higher scale which creates a emotional effect. Again the four notes are repeated in the same way as the first eight bars however there are semi quavers that make that again make the scale faster which introduces a new rhythm to the audience this is then repeated for another ten bars.

This creates a scarier and more suspenseful atmosphere in the piece.

The piece starts with 4 bars of piano solo which repeat through out the song. This is the obstinato. The texture is thickened when another c note is added, c is the base note. Another rhythm is then introduced on top of this which repeats through the middle of the song, then to finish it reverts back to the original notes that it started with. its effective because of its slowness. through out the song the pace changes from slow to a quicker pace then it slows down again. It goes from Soft to Loud gradually in the middle.
